That sounds like a very bad idea from the perspective of everyone who doesn't have a powerful graphics card. It also isn't something you can support very easily into the future / om possible future platforms.

If the gpu isnt powerful enough, just decrease resolution to 64x96

there are some good ways to do darkness effects and fog.

Samacado did it with inverted eyeball meshes, so the fog/shadow follows you all around. It looks good and works nicely, just weld the fog to their head/torso. Much better, and less laggy than stickmasterluke's fog, and you could try it with different shapes and colours for all kinds of good effects.

@Bunny, I made the same 'fog' effect as Samacado in 2008. You couldn't even call it fog..
Using my particle effects looks better. :3
