~Progress Does Not Come Free~ [Beware the word wall!] [A note here: This is technically ‘post-apocalyptic’ (No zombies involved.). If you dislike that genre, then I would recommend leaving, unless you wish to give it a shot. Who knows? Maybe this one is more of your speed.]
When you first wake up, you find yourself laying on a cold, dusty floor made of some form of concrete. You struggle at first to gain control of your body, and then sit up blearily, rubbing your eyes in an attempt to clear your vision. The entire room is lit only by a gaping, jagged-edged hole in wall, in which sunlight streams through, illuminating tiny dust motes that twirl in an unfelt breeze.
Upon examining your surroundings, you find that you are in some form of bomb shelter, but it seems it was abandon a long time ago, as the dust remains almost undisturbed. ‘Who was here before you? Why had they left you behind?’ You wonder this and more, but continue on your mission to try and find out where exactly you are… Outside, you seem to find yourself in a desert, in some form of bunker complex, judging by all of the steel doors jutting from the ground. It seems almost to be like a little neighborhood with paths dividing the bunkers from each other, and orderly rows of buildings with their own ‘yards’. You travel on one path, trying your best to keep in the shadows, just in case you aren’t alone, and the other person isn’t the friendliest. You eventually come to a large wooden pole in the ground, with a single newspaper article flapping in the breeze pinned on it.
You lean in, and begin to read it, hoping it may give you some clue on what exactly is going on…
Well, to anyone reading this, I’m sorry to tell you the end of the world as most of you may know it was not induced by a nuclear war. There was no alien invasions, zombie infestations, or major battles between feuding countries. There were no genetic mutations, sudden awakening of mythical creatures, resonance cascades, or even AI uprisings, no ladies and gentlemen; it was all because of progress…
Now, I’m not sure if you know what runs your electronics, and your answer may be ‘power’. That may be right and all, but where does all power come from? If your answer was ‘power plants’, you’ve just won a million dollars. For my final question; do you have any idea what countless rows of factories, power plants, and industrial units produce? POLLUTION! Very good! Now think, what would happen if a uncaring government bent on production, a group of scientists that keep making ‘newer’ and ‘better’ items for our convince, and a large demand for these goods all come together…?
Can you picture it? The giant smokestacks that constantly billow out great heaps of smoke, that cause artificial nights, the rumble of war machines being created, the smell of the waste, it was unbearable… and that isn’t the worst of it. As our plants started dying, and the deserts began growing, and the ice caps began to melt, revolts began, countries fell while others survived, already dealing with their own problems, and soon, you couldn’t sneeze without knocking over the towering metal skeleton of a skyscraper, or reducing a rusted car to dust. (Not that anyone would be out at this point; any sensible person was in a bunker city.)
But soon, very slowly, the smog covering what seemed like everything started to fade away, and then all us survivors crawled out from under our rocks, came out from our shelters, and lowered are shotguns, and just sat there and stared, wondering; ‘is it all really over’? “No.” Answered the honeyed voice of life. “It’s not over you twits.”
And indeed it wasn’t over. You see, having a great wasteland just waiting to be molded and shaped really entices some people, making them feel like little gods, and soon they begin to reform everything. That is the same with about every hollow shell of a country that survived. For where we are, and where you are probably standing, reading this lone ‘newspaper’ article that I managed to type up before I had to flee the district; you are in United World Industries territory. UWI, as we civvies like to call them, took over after the Catastrophe happened, and claimed they would hold the position of leader until someone fit would arise…
Obviously, no one was appointed, because they set up shop here, and installed a new government and everything. They called it simply ‘The Government’, and we are still stuck under it’s control, and believe me, it isn’t a happy existence. Think of it like a monarchy. You have the kings (Government Representatives), and then the nobles (‘The Wealthy’), the guards (Public Security), and finally the working class. No clergy has appeared in years, well, at least none that I can find. It’s rumored that there are some roving bands of priests, which like to take in any traveler they find, and persuade them to join up. You don’t have to of course but… that’s a different matter.
As the working class, we all have to wear a strict dress code of thick boots, leather aprons, gloves, and gas masks. Where you are at, you won’t have to worry too much about having to wear the protective gear that we have to, but I recommend trying to find some before you venture out of Bunkerville. As the working class, we live in small towns and villages located just about everywhere. In the lucky areas, people can grow crops and livestock, but as for the rest of us, we primarily work as smiths, carpenters, and a variety of other small jobs. (Note: There are no longer documented working factories, as even the Government has enough sense not to repeat this. Note the words ‘documented’ and ‘working’.)
The richer folk however, can afford to move into the cities, which are out of the badlands, where the pollution blight is still thick. Most of us call the area where they set up shop the ‘goodlands’, because it has all the grass and trees, and all that pretty junk. Anyone can make it to the top, and go there, but it’s costly, and take years upon years of skill, work, ad luck. You can also visit too, but make sure you have a good reason, or Public Security will get you…
Ah. That brings me to another point. Public Security is the name for the police force around here. ‘For the good of all of us’ is their motto, but usually it’s for the good of them. They hand-select goody-two shoes from the lot of us, and then give them some training, and deploy them to areas that need a little law enforcing. They are a brutal lot, and really, I wonder if the Government really cares who they arrest or beat up, as long as it doesn’t affect them, fair game.
The bottom of the article is frayed, like someone ripped of chunks of it, for what reason, you do not know. As you gaze about the dusty plain, you realize how utterly lost you are in this vast new world, and wonder how you should go about your business… and then you notice the others.
~~
FACTIONS (You May Want To Know) These are the main factions that you will need to know around here if you plan to even begin to try and make a living. Note that you have a certain reputation with each group, and the wrong action could land you in a heap of trouble.
Working Force/Civilians- The backbone of the Goverment, these men and women toll day and night to keep the country running, and each other alive.
Weapons: Makeshift weaponry such as rocks and slingshots.
Attitude: Generally suspicious of newcomers, but hospitable none-the-less. Will attack Public Security officers if alone, or in secluded groups; but not too often.
General Clothing: Jumpsuit, leather smock, boots, gloves, and gas mask. ----
Rebels- As with all reigns of terror, there are always the rebels, bright lights in the eyes of all working class members. There are several groups of them, all with different aims in how to take down their enemy, but this will cover the general spectrum:
Weapons: Whatever they can get their hands on; most commonly semi-automatic weapons.
Attitude: Varies, but all despise the Government.
General Clothing: Varies, usually camouflage or body armor. ----
Public Security- The police force of the Government, most of it’s members are trusted individuals, with a few conscr.ipted people.
Weapons: Handgun, baton, stun gun.
Attitude: Usually brutish and arrogant, Public Security officers will not hesitate to use their baton in any situation.
General Clothing: A dark grey and blue uniform with a thick bulletproof vest, a utility belt with their handcuffs, weapons, and radio. A common sign is their black peaked hat, which is rumored to have some sort of radio communicator in it. In the badlands, they will also wear gas masks. ----
Gov. Troopers- Mysterious figures that seem to be able to generate their own mist cover without use of smoke grenades. Not much is known about these soldiers, if they even are human, except that most who encounter them do not come out alive again.
Weapons: Apparently automatic weapons and explosives. (No reports of actual snipers have been reported.)
Attitude: Extremely loyal to the Government.
General Clothing: The last person who managed to survive an encounter with them, and got close enough to capture a fleeting glimpse, noted they were wearing gas masks and WWII-ish uniforms, but who knows, as this may just be an exaggerated tale. ----
The Wealthy- The richer citizenry of the Government’s rule, they commonly serve as government officials, ambassadors, and a variety of other jobs.
Weapons: Pepper Spray/Stun Gun if any.
Attitude: Very uppity and discourteous to the work force. They generally use as many big words as possible in a sentence when speaking to people they consider inferior.
General Clothing: It all depends on the current trend, but usually some form of formal wear. ----
Bandits- The scum of the world, bandits aren’t only just robbers who wait along the roadside to attack, the name also applies to raiders, ‘corrupt’ rebels, and anyone else with a weapon and a bad attitude.
Weapons: Anything to everything they can use to harm others with.
Attitude: Depending on the group, this can range from very sneaky and shy to extremely violent and bold.
General Clothing: Any form of protective gear, usually including a gas mask as they like to hang about the blighted areas of the Badlands.
-----{Overall}----- This RP will be handled like a free-roam RP, but with one long-term set of goals, (The main quest. It is noted that there are multiple ones of these, depending on your mindset.) and then the shorter-term goals. (Side quests.) The long-term goals are mandatory, but the short-term goals are entirely optional. Completing said side quests can have their benefits, but can also have negative consequences, (i.e; Increasing your reputation with Public Security, but decreasing it with the rebels, and so on.) so be careful on how you chose them.
{Items}
You will encounter a variety of items on your travels; each having their own purpose and classification. They may be bought and sold from various shops, or found on dead enemies; and can either help or hinder you, depending on who you happen to be around.
{Health}
Health represents how much damage you have sustained, either by being attacked, or by falling from considerable heights. You automatically start with 10/10 Life Points, or LP, and will lose some if damaged. The health will go as following…
10/10 – Unscathed 9-8/10 – Minor Damage 7-6/10 – Light Damage 5-4/ - Moderate Damage 4-3/ Heavy Damage 2-1/ Near Death
While these numbers may seem frightening, LP being taken away is usually difficult, but is possible. Gaining health can be accomplished in many ways, such as:
Going to a hospital, Using a medical kit, (Only if experienced.) Having a medic patch you up, And more.
Your health will be reported out every day, as well as during battles.
More health cannot be gained, but layers of armor can be applied.
{Food and Water}
Food and water are needed to survive in this RP, and unless you are somehow used to being dehydrated, or starved, then you will need food and water. If neither are gotten in a certain period of time, you will begin to feel the effects, and will eventually die. Please note that rations will be provided to you, but just enough to keep you alive; and only if you stay on the good side of the law. Extra rations can be obtained by doing the following:
Stealing, Buying them from shops, Earning them, or Finding them,
{Vitals}
At the end of each day, your vitals will be reported out, like so.
[NAME HERE]
?/10 LP Hunger: N/A Thirst: N/A
{Battle}
Battle isn’t any different from regular RP skirmish, you RP what you do, and then I respond with what the enemy does and so on; only I tell you how much damage you take from a hit, and where. (Arm, leg, head, ect.)
~APPENDIX~
Bunker city: A complex of bunkers formed like a mini city, only underground. Most lived in these during the Catastrophe. (Please note that several kinds of animals were brought down too, along with solar lights, generators, and small Emergency Atmosphere Purifiers.)
Catastrophe, The: The result of too much smog in the atmosphere, this term refers to the years spent underground as the populace waited out the pollution.
Emergency Atmosphere Purifiers: An invention by a Dr. Eisemburg, these colossal machines were found toiling away in a laboratory somewhere in western Europe; as it was once called. They must’ve cleared the atmosphere, or at least quicker than usual; as a scout reported the air was clearing only months after we entered the bunkers. Smaller versions of these were provided to clear the bunker air, but we still do not know what kind of power source these run on though…
Bunkerville: The location you are currently at, it is a notably large bunker area
Weather Conditions: Just as a note, most of the time the weather in the area you will be in most of the time is overcast, with a scattering of rain, acid and otherwise.
Transportation: Most goods are relayed through complex train systems and roads. There are very few boats, as there is not much water, and airplanes are even rarer. The working force usually drives large trucks and wagons (More of the latter, as gas is very rare.) while the richer folk drive more expensive, futuristic looking cars. (Although these are rather rare also.)
RULES --------- Follow the Roblox rules of role-playing.
No ubering/godmodding.
No gary/mary sues.
Use ‘story RPing’, please. (I.e; I walked outside, enjoying the bright sunshine of the pleasant summer day, and wandered into traffic, as light as a feather.)
No romance. Period. No question marks or exclamation points involved.
No controlling the NPCs, please. Their reactions to certain situations are crucial to some plot elements.
Try to do your best with grammar.
Admins are anyone I see fit, including the following people:
No ‘powers’. This isn’t a comic book, being bitten by a radioactive [Insert Creature Here] would result in radiation poison, not telepathy.
DISCLAIMER: You CAN die. And believe me, if you get yourself into a mess, I will try to get rid of you, as whoever you are fighting would. No lucky breaks or whatnot, you get yourself out of your own messes.
