x = 3.99... 10x = 39.99... 10x - x = 39.99... - x 9x = 36 9x/9 = 36/9 x = 4
You did the third line wrong. You can't subtract x from the other side, since you aren't supposed to know what it is.
10x/10 = 39.99/10 x = 3.99

| Unfortunately, I forgot much about algebra during the summer, so I cannot disprove your "fact" with anything more solid than the blatant knowledge that 1x10(to some negative infinate power or 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 and on) is still a number. |

Looked through my old math notes. I remember now. :) It's for the sum of an infinite geometric sequence. And then there's some fancy formula with Greek letters that I can't type out. |
