I am referring to it as the 'please advise' style of thread. Essentially the players are advising a remote NPC character on how to respond to a situation. This is a lot like a pick a choice RP but the players can say everything and the character on the other end is capable of responding independently as well.
The players only know what this character tells them and this character doesn't always do what they say.
These threads are good for players of all experience levels, and are meant for shorter threads though much longer threads can work too.

maybe someone over the phone, or the intercom, through a telepathic transmission to their brain, just about any means out there. Heck they might be the character's conscience.
The players' actually nature doesn't even have to be defined. |

anyhow, this kind of RP is great for creating a prologue to other kinds of thread. For example, the players are Alliance field operatives working to advise a lone scientist in an outpost with an escaped experiment on what to do because he's to panicked to make decisions himself.
You could have this scientist ultimately fail and the player be Alliance Field Operatives sent to deal with the problem. |

As to the character screwing up 1. if the creator implements a random number generator system 2. if what seems to be sound advise doesn't work for the situation. |

The 50-50 chance of something bad or not will happen.
Or a single action that unintentionally dooms them without anyone realizing. |
