***Before you read! This short story is inspired by a flash game. The title of this story, and the name of one character comes from the flash game. The story, however, is different.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I’m glad you came to join us today, Dr. Bradshaw. I’m Andrew Jacobs. I run the solitary confinement part of this prison.” I was greeted in this manner by Mr. Jacobs on the 22nd of July. I was in my office, arranging files, when I received an urgent phone call from the management of the Northwood Prison, telling me of a “mentally handicapped” man who was escorted into solitary confinement three hours prior to the call. They said they needed an expert on human resources to come and see if I could figure out what was wrong with him. Being the educated man I was, I quickly responded to the call and quickly drove up to Northwood.

Andrew led me though a few winding hallways until we reached Northwood Prison Block C: Solitary Confinement. “The man you are about to speak to has been in this prison for Eight years. I don’t know what got into earlier, but he starting babbling incessantly about the strangest things, so we had to move him out of the main cells.” “What is his name?” I asked. “His name is Ryan. No one ever told us what his last name was.” Andrew led me to his cell, and opened the door.

The room was quite large. The room was divided by a think glass wall. On my side, there was an office chair for me to sit in, and a hole through the glass so that I could communicate with this “Ryan” person. On the other side, there was a bed, a sink, a small toilet, and a young man, about in his mid-thirties, standing there, looking at me. “Ryan” Andrew said “This is Doctor Michael Bradshaw; he has come to talk to you for a while.” Afterwards, Andrew left, and it was just Ryan and myself, divided by a glass wall. He looked relatively normal; if he was crazy, you couldn’t tell just by his looks.

“Hello Ryan. Please, take a seat.” Ryan sat down on the chair opposite of mine. “Before we begin, would you mind telling me a little about yourself?” Ryan inhaled, and then started talking. “Well, first of all, I have been alone most of my life. My father was a drunkard, and my mother died of cancer when I was four. I was the only child, and I tended to stay in my room most of the time, out of fear of my father. At one time, it was my ambition to become a musician, for I was rather gifted at the Violin. But that dream was crushed when I lost a talent show.”

“At one time, there was a woman in my life, named Kathryn, but that was a brief blink in my life. Then I found myself here. I was ignored by most of the others here, and I was recently placed in this room. I’ll shorten it to a single statement; I have only ever had the company of myself. Always have, and always will.”

I reflected on the final statement that Ryan said. “Where did you work? Did you ever have a job?” I asked. “I did” Ryan said “I worked with a small manufacturing company for two years.” I then asked, “Did you quit?” “No, I was fired for insubordination” said Ryan. I began to feel slightly uneasy. “Where did you used to live?” I asked. “A small apartment on Songbird Street, but I have no connection with anyone who lives there, or anyone who lived there prior to my arrival here.” A strange response, then then again, I remembered where we were, so a strange response is to be expected.

We talked like this for a couple of hours. He answered all of my questions without showing any signs of why he was here, what was wrong with him, or anything out of the ordinary. I got up to leave, when I remembered something he mentioned earlier. “You said there was a woman named Kathryn in your life. What happened to her?” At this, Ryan suddenly tensed up, his eyes darting across the room. He then took a deep breath, relaxed, and sat upright. “Kathryn was that special woman. The one wanted to be with.”
“I met her at a nature park in Colorado. I bumped into her in a snack line. We started talking, and then we became the best of friends. Well, friendship soon led to something more. I asked her on a date. She accepted. From there, life was great. One date led to several. Finally, I asked her the big question ‘will you marry me’ and she accepted to my delight. We were wed, moved into our new apartment, and life was great.” Ryan cried a little bit. “We were partners, devoted to each other. I helped her, she helped me. I loved her, she loved me. There was nothing that could split us apart.”

“I needed her, she needed me. But, when she needed me most, I…” He stuttered. He started quietly sobbing. “I betrayed her. I betrayed her loyalty to me. I’m not proud of it, at all. I hate myself for it. I deserve to be alone for the rest of my life for what I did.” Ryan stopped talking, cried some more, then regained his sanity. “Well, good day Ryan” I said. I walked out of the room, looked back onto his face, still wet with tears, and then closed the door.

It didn’t occur to me until I got back to my office about what happened, and how he was put into prison. I pulled out an Eight year old newspaper I kept, titled “Woman found dead on Songbird Street.” As I read over it, it made sense. The woman was found dead in an apartment building. She had been strangled. The woman also had a baby on the way. The man responsible was put into prison.

Ryan betrayed her when she needed him most. She had a baby coming, and needed his support. He couldn’t bear the stress of a child and having no job, for he was unemployed at the time. He killed her, to keep the baby from coming. I was tired, and didn’t want to think any more about the subject. I curled up into bed, thinking about the report I would have to send back to the prison tomorrow, and I also thought about Ryan, the man whose only company has been the company of himself.
