The following script is supposed to make Baseplate not cast a shadow:
game.Workspace.Baseplate.CastShadows = false
OutPut: Mon Jul 18 20:38:51 2011 - CastShadows is not a valid member of Part
Here's proof that this property is supposed to exist: http://news.roblox.com/index.php/CastShadows |

| Well, that stinks, because the Baseplate casts an annoying shadow on the clouds below it, and it shows up on the Baseplate. |

1) people can not see this shadow depending on their shadow settings, so dont build your game around shadows unless you feel confident. 2) make the baseplate's transparency 0.001. transparency cannot currently be calculated into roblox's shadow engine, so it doesnt calculate the shadows. |

"people can not see this shadow depending on their shadow settings..."
Yes, I too could not see shadows, until a recent update, which also seemed to give Trusses little diagonal bars in their holes too. Maybe my computer isn't so bad after all, though it is old. |
