Here is a promotion guideline for officers based on what role they should be doing for their rank. Please be aware that this is not based off the army in real life by any means due to the obvious differences in scale.
2nd / 1st Lieutenant - Platoon commander (Two or three sections, each section having 8 men)
Captain - Deputy Battalion Commander
Major - Battalion Commander
Lieutenant Colonel - Brigade Executive Officer
Colonel - Brigade Commanding Officer
Brigadier General - Division Executive Officer
Major General - Division Commanding Officer
Lieutenant General - Division Commanding Officer promoted due to merit
General - Has the job of maintaining multiple divisions and regiments, an example being the special forces commanding general
In the case of a shortage of officers in a brigade or a division, a lower ranking officer may take the role of a higher ranking officer if there is nobody of a higher rank as a lower role in the division. For example, if a division has a commanding officer that is a major general, and there is no executive officer the commanding officer may promote a captain to the role as long as there is no major or above in the division. This is to avoid illegal promotion.
