| I was interested to see where the scripting pros learned and where they started off so maybe I could follow in their steps! How long did it take? What would you recommend beginners do to learn? I have followed alvinBLOX's tutorials and I would recommend them to any beginner, but where do I go from here? |

The wiki. Unlike YouTube demonstrations, learning how to script takes a lot of work. Be prepared for lots of effort.

i'd say watch a few youtube videos on various stuff such as save scripts, custom chat guis, etc. just to get a feel for all the services roblox provides
the wiki is amazing for learning too, just read up on the stuff u want and eventually it'll just become common knowledge |

The wiki isn't a place to learn basics, in my opinion, I use it for documentation and finding new things I didn't know before.

Learn how to navigate the Wiki, but don't try to learn the basics from solely the Wiki. I watched videos from PeasPod/PeasFactory, and did worked alongside the video. (If you don't try what he's doing in real time, you're wasting your time)
Come up with random challenges to challenge yourself with, specific to content you recently learned, or a step above. |

| I use the ROBLOX Wiki. But when I need help and the ROBLOX wiki doesn't work out for me I just go on scriptinghelpers (dot) org but, when people ignore my post on it (lol happened to me) I just go on youtube and watch tutorials. |

| Thanks for the replies!I'm definitely gonna try out the wiki. I have already learned the most of the basics so I will try to go on to the more advanced stuff. |

| I learnt from editing some things in free models. Then when I wanted to do some more advanced things I looked at YT and the wiki |

If you want to challenge yourself to script you could make a 'challenge me' thread in which you ask random people to challenge you to script different things.

"Unlike YouTube demonstrations, learning how to script takes a lot of work." I learned from youtube and I'd say I'm pretty alright at it. |

"I learned from youtube and I'd say I'm pretty alright at it." Because you used effort. People seem to have a tendency to just copy scripts from youtube and not learn anything, just blindly following directions.
*low-quality mic and 16yo with the flu voice* "Now we put the for i= loop so that the script knows what to do with the table"
It could be much worse. Remember when every beginner thought that functions had to be named "onTouched" because that was the wiki's convention? That sucked.

ugh I remember that. And
"i made an onTouched function but it isn't working, anyone know why? entire code:
function onTouched() print(touch) end" |

"The wiki isn't a place to learn basics"
No! it is.
Well kind of, depends on your comprehension, the wiki is more of a dictionary.
I recommend using free models and try to understand what the free modeled script does.
HTML is my "programming language" 😎😎😎 |

| Learning from free models mostly means you're learning from either outdated or inefficient methods. It's a waste of time unless you're already experienced |

People who are pros are people who PRACTICE. You need to learn Lua but you also need to PRACTICE it. You need to do programming challenges and practice problems and make new things to actually get better. Learning Lua isn't the hard part, anyone can read Programming in Lua 5.0 book, the roblox wiki, or watch a few tutorials but you have to make sure you actually understand it. You do this not by memorization and watching someone explain something and following his EXACT STEPS but by practicing.
After you being to get pro at that stuff, you begin to realize that the thing known as "MATH" is very useful in programming and computer science and is what separates an average programmer from a better one. If you don't like math, it doesn't mean you hate it, but you probably don't like it because you are bad at it. Make sure you start to like math and understand why it's so cool and powerful, and understand how stuff can relate to ROBLOX and programming in general.
People who are great at scripting do all of these things, you can definitely find some cooler things about the ROBLOX API over at wiki.roblox.com or you could jump right into learning Lua from scratch and then diving into ROBLOX (which is the method I prefer) over at
lua .org /pil/contents.html
Which is a free online book on Lua 5.0 (ROBLOX uses 5.1) written by the actual creators of Lua. The book can be pretty challenging to read if you have the mindset that it is hard, but if you want to read it, make sure you actually understand pages before clicking "next page" and pretending you get it. |

you learn the basics from anywhere
and then you use the wiki, lua reference, and other scripters who are available to you to improve upon your knowledge and try new things
and with this you constantly find better ways to do things |

Forgot to add some stuff so I postface that stuff with:
Make sure to join communities! The Scripters Forum is a great place to ask questions, start discussions and get help. But there also a lot of others places, there are discords filled with smart scripters that have great advice. Here are a few discords:
Scripting Helpers -> discord.gg/ZW2pqnC Scripters Community Forum -> discord.gg/5JC8e9N Roblox Helpers -> discord.gg/xU7ZgVC
MadScientist recently started a more programming centric discord at https://forum.roblox.com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=224493163 |
