So I know that parts are welded together to form a motor, but what determines the direction that the part rotates when setting the desired angle?

Thanks for the reference. I have a few questions though. I don't quite understand how the ## ################ ## properties determine the axis of rotation AND the way the parts are attached. The wiki doesn't really make this clear. Also from what I have read, Motor6D is more useful in the animation editor for 3 axis rotation, but how would I do this manually? I am trying to make animations but with more precision and flexibility than regular animations. I know I can figure out the math, I just don't know how to use motors to do it...

They really need to make a wiki article on this, Motor6D is so horribly documented.

all motors imo.... I cant figure out how this works. it looks like two parts in a motor are welded together based on the C 0 and C 1 values, but then how can the axis of rotation be determined by the same values? it makes no sense.

From http://wiki.roblox.com/index.php?title=Joints#Motor_and_Motor6D :

"The Motor6D allows for rotation about 3 axis. Currently the only way to access this functionality is through the Animation plugin."

Welp.

Further down this page explains axis of rotation for a basic motor, but that won't help you much.

Right, that is what I am confused about. There is no contradiction between the offset of the joint (the positions the parts are attached in) and their axis of rotation.

Also, what if I wanted to create my own animations without the animation editor, using only math? It seems like people do it all the time, but you can't do it without 3 axis rotation.

I have no idea how they do it. It seems like they are using motors, or that's some damn smooth interpoation of a weld.
