| I don't know what the terminal velocity in Roblox is. For all of you that don't know, terminal velocity is the constant speed that a freely falling object eventually reaches when the resistance of the medium through which it is falling prevents further acceleration. |

Well Roblox accelerates you downwards at 196.2 studs/sec^2 However this acceleration is done every physics step, so we'll say every step it accelerates you downwards at x; x = 192.2/60 = 3.27.
Our position is stored as a Vector3, that is with three numbers (32-bit floating point numbers x, y, and z respectively). However we only need to focus on the Y position as that's what mainly changes when we fall.
Terminal velocity is n such that n + 3.27 == n. A 32-bit floating point number consists of 24 bits of precision, which means that at 2^24 - 1, all precision bits are used up.
This means when your velocity downwards reaches 2^24 + 4 studs/sec which is about 16.8 million studs/sec. That is when you will hit terminal velocity. Terminal velocity as a side-effect of floating-point precision, not as an actual hard limit.
However, you wouldn't be able to tell and you'd probably be dead instantly due to that speed clipping you through the ground or whatever. |
