About a month, maybe two months ago, there was a petition created to build an auditorium for my old high school. I believe I told OT about having to perform plays on a crappy portable stage in a cafeteria to an audience of about 30. Meanwhile the baseball team gets indoor batting cages and the football team gets a professional-grade astroturf field.
Well, I checked the status of the petition. Out of IOOOO signatures required, only about IOOO have been collected.
Once again, the arts are put on the back burner...

@pulch
Let me give a rundown of just how little was given to the arts:
Shower curtain with ocean design, a wooden crate with a cheap tablecloth for a table, classroom chairs for dining chairs, plastic plates and cutlery for silverware. That was our imagining of a fancy dinner on a ship.
I was supposed to be a pirate, and my costume was about 3 sizes too big, but we didn't have the budget to do alterations or get a better costume (because the costumes were basically whatever the drama teacher could find in her attic).
For makeup, some of the girls just brought in their everyday makeup and we all did the best we could on each other but by no means was it professional.

Funny thing, back when I was a freshman, I wrote a letter to the county school board about this. I stated why we needed an auditorium and everything it could be used for (even pointing out how bad assemblies were because of the gym's crappy acoustics). I also wrote to the principal. Neither wrote back to me.

Actually, now that I think about it, they just need to build a new building. The current one barely houses a student body of 1200. There aren't even enough lockers for everyone, and a lot of the lockers are jammed or broken.
And the lock on the disabled stall in the girls' bathroom in the cafeteria broke back when I was a junior. I kid you not, it took them 6 MONTHS to get around to fixing something that could have taken 5 seconds to fix. Thank goodness we didn't have any girls who had to use that particular stall.
I'm glad I'm not there any more, but I would like conditions to be improved for current and future students.
