Anime really doesn't make sense. It's weird. The style is weird, the characters are weird, the soundtrack is weird.

All it's about is spiky haired boys and really darn long haired girls try to look pretty, with the irises and eyes looking so sharp edged it could kill.

Lately, everyone tells me "ogm all u.s cartoons suck anime is the quaran111". It's not IMO. It's stupid, weird, and a waste of time when someone could be making themselves a penny richer than a penny lesser.

Well anime itself is pretty good, a lot of it at least. The fans known as "weeaboos" are another case, and you should just ignore them because they think anything western should just burn.

I could say the same for cartoons, but I enjoy both cartoons and anime so I won't say that.

It's popular because people like it. I can't say it's good because that's just my opinion, there's a lot of people who dislike anime, and I'll respect their opinions.

This question of "Why is _____ so popular" is just the dumbest question I'll ever see.

But why? Why is it good? What makes it so "Unique" from what I've seen when I was growing up?

Because good varies depending on the person
I find anime like Space Dandy, Yu-Gi-Oh, Sgt. Frog and Soul Eater good

it's just like food, it's someone's taste
it's whatever something finds good

@Delfer no. I hardly spend any time watching TV and I work at a small paying half job.

What I want to know is why is it unique and "Good" Compared to what I used to watch.

If your tired of seeing the action type of anime, just watch Ghost Hunt. It's short, kind of scary, and NO swords what so ever. Just a bit of magic and scary ghosts.

Characters are weird? Well, people are weird. A lot of western shows are just the same story, like crime shows. In crime shows, all of the characters are way too similar. Yeah, some of them are different, but... the best western show I've seen in terms of character individuality is Adventures of Merlin. The characters aren't all that weird, but they are definitely individuals, with a good personality of their own.

It's just tastes, I guess.

Rock, if there was an anime that focused solely on guns, would you be interested?

@delfar
It depends.
Most of my time I spent watching The Adventures of TinTin, Woody the Woodpecker, Speedy Gonzalez, Rat Patrol, MASH, Hogan's Heroes, Texaco star theater, and much of Abbot and Lou Costello. There's tons more, but that's my top 8.
@mega maybe.

To me character development and story is done better than American cartoons, my only favorite cartoon is Star Wars Attack of the Clones before they made Rebels. I would suggest watching something like Say "I Love You' or Your Lie in April, they both have great characters and a great stories.

Depending on what anime you watch, it can be good. I don't typically like anime, but some anime-influenced shows are pretty good. Anime usually follows an intense plot structure and is usually violent and over the top. Most anime shows aimed at kids are TV PG or TV 14. Japan is very hands free with kids content. In the U.S. a kids show wouldn't say "damn" or "hell" or even "ass" but an anime kids show would. Dragon Ball Z has gotten in trouble multiple times for edgy content and language. If you don't typically like anime and want to get a feel of it, here are some good anime-influenced shows you should be familiar with:

Avatar: The Last Airbender
Teen Titans
Batman Beyond
Spiderman Unlimited

An anime-influenced show and anime are similar but different. An anime influenced show is a show adopted by the anime sub-culture for having a similar plot structure or art style that can be broadcasted in Japan. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a grey area in the anime spectrum. It follows everything an anime show does but it is not made in Japan. Loosely it is considered an anime but technically it isn't. Once you watch those 4 shows you should have a pretty diverse understanding of anime influence on United States culture.
