"Renowned physicist Hawking has warned that humanity needs to become a multi-planetary species within the next century in order to avoid extinction." - Newsweek

he predicts that by the next century all food on the planet will be devoid and even if it isnt, we would be extinct due to a super-virus of some sort.

do you agree? or is he a mad capitalist?

Within the next century is totally possible, the population is growing at exponential rates, and the world is very unstable as we speak

We could see the world start to fall apart within our own lifetimes

Why do you think basically every space agency out there is putting so much more focus on finding habitable exoplanets and stuff

to be honest if we colonize another planet we're just going to encounter the same problems we did on Earth

"to be honest if we colonize another planet we're just going to encounter the same problems we did on Earth"

Of course, but overpopulation and food shortage issues would be very drastically delayed if... say, we managed to colonize a planet 7 times the size of Earth or more (which they've found before), or 7 separate planets, like NASA announced about a month ago

And when that time comes, granted we're still alive and kicking, those problems will be easier to solve because we'll have experience

The first time around colonizing won't be easy. So many factors to consider

Effects of space on the body, efficient space travel, how to get everyone there in one piece, what to do when we land etc

It's going to be like the pilgrims landing in the new world but a hell of a lot harder

I'd rather be dead than live in a future that relies on technological inventions.

"I'd rather be dead than live in a future that relies on technological inventions."

We've kinda been doing this since cavemen discovered fire

Agreed though, we're already seeing stuff like bio-implants and thought-to-speech tech being developed

I refuse to use it

Depictions of the future conducted by people honestly just scare me. I can't imagine how ridiculous the future would be if we'd have flying cars and technology-based workers.

The world would've been fine before what's considered the 'modern era' (2005+). A life without a challenge is not a life worth living.

Hawking's always been off his rocker, I take everything he says with more than a few grains of salt.

The idea is that with technological innovation we can get rid of 'unnecessary' hard work which will lead to people doing what they want to do, but with that comes so many issues that we're not prepared for

Crap like flying cars are nothing but a pipe dream though, I don't see a jetsons-esque future in the near forecast

A ridiculous amount of change to infastructure across the globe would have to take place

We already have so many rules on flying airplanes and simple drones, highways in the skies definitely aren't happening

honestly in 50 years the world will probably be the same just some newer-looking buildings, maybe more advanced cars, and new people.

i know thats really easy to say, but its the truth

"why not solve the problems here instead of avoiding it"

I'm not even joking, getting to the root of our issues would literally require killing more than 3/4ths of the planet, then enforcing population control

you cant really solve population growth, especially when its reaching unprecendented, exponential scales. unless you want to explore options of making our society a dystopia of some sort

I can't deny that he has a lot of credibility, but this same thing has been said for centuries.

There's another way >in theory< that could be done but it was in a book so idk if it could be done

Introduce a virus to the world that randomly activates and renders a percentage of people steril along with their descendents, then wipes itself out

Slow down population growth over time until it's at a manageable size

Again though, it's just from Dante's Inferno by Dan (what) Brown so I doubt it would ever work lol

Interesting idea though

if we really wanna to become multi-planetary species sooner, we should provide space organizations more freedom and funding other than spending it on investigative military

(cough U.S cough NK)

"a 1 child policy really isn't a bad idea"

It's not for the good of the "collective", but then again, whenever one body of power has been given that kind of control, it's never ended well for anyone

Huge hit on individual rights, and once it's that far things can easily snowball

I do agree though with hatchets honestly, undeveloped countries in particular are creating way too many kids

it would be very hard to make it to a potentially habitable ######### - fuel - time - ########## costs and the most important of them all, think about the "potentially" in "potentially habitable" these planets may not be suitable for life, in the end, the slightest mistake could cost humanity a bunch but then, if we do plan on moving to mars, well, that's a different story it can be terraformed and we will ######## it in the future but ############ takes very long, millions-of-years-wise and it is not as big as the Earth, so moving billions of people to mars will prove difficult for it will be ########### just like india
