"why not just emulate it honestly?"
i hate emulation and prefer physical controls and real console hardware
honestly though the analogue nt mini is the best nes on the market and if your a "hardcore" nes player you should definitely get one if you have the money

so why not get a raspberry pi, stick the kernel on it (maybe Arch??) install an NES emulator, hook it up to a screen, and put a USB NES controller in it?
isn't that basically the same experience sans the NES console box?

"isn't that basically the same experience sans the NES console box?"
not to me
it's probably just my love of retro consoles talking but there's something special about using legitimate hardware than just emulating the the thing
as i said, i hate emulation and do everything i can to avoid it

"So it plays NES cartridges?"
yeah, but it's literally using nes hardware while being completely recoded to give the best experience on it from audio to what it's displaying
at least that's how i'd put it |

it's also able to play famicom cartridges, and can use the famicom disk system
and there's a glass window bottom on the nt mini which is the best feature of it |

Nice. I'll stick with the original console I have since the nt mini seems pretty expensive. Does it also play Famicom games too if you use a 60 to 72 pin adapter?

There's a small rumor that they discontinued it to make room for a SNES Classic. Might not be a good idea, they had trouble keeping up with the demand of the NES Classic.

yeah
pretty sure most games on the disk system were released on cartridges before, not sure how much of a quality boost the disks give though |

They're probably prepared this time. The same thing happened with amiibo and now you seem them everywhere. I don't know why the always underestimate the demand for their products though

Just slap in an NES emulator on your PC, but the analogue nt mini is really neat and fully accurate though.
NES Classic was awful, offering only 20 NES games and using hacks. SNES Classic will probably also be poo, because we already have a super accurate SNES emulator called higan.

the nes classic offered 30 games, and it was an emulation box itself
the thing itself wasn't bad though, you were saving a lot of money from buying games and an actual nes (but the nes classic still costed $60, and it was really hard to find in stores)
it just wasn't practical

@thrift
Best way to save money: Don't pay at all.
Just download some ROMs or if you are against that dumpimg cartridges and use a cycle accurate NES emulator. In my opinion, I see nothing wrong with pirating older games.
No point in NES Classic existing. |

"I see nothing wrong with pirating older games."
it is actually wrong, because those games are still on sale on nintendo's Virtual Console
id understand something like metal gear being pirated, since it was rare and there was no proper localization, but definitely not something as widespread as super mario bros
even the mother 3 translation team understands that mother 3 is a rare game. they say that if you're going to pirate, at least buy nintendo's official merchandise
also, it shouldn't matter about how old the game is it should matter about how relevant it is |

also renewing licensed games
if the license of a game expired, it is perfectly ok to pirate something like super mario bros doesn't have an expired licensed if a game is no longer being supported, the license would expire and be used to legally pirate
example: chrono trigger is perfectly legal to pirate not the snes final fantasy games, though |

You can get Metal Gear on PS3. Also, what do you mean no proper localization? I looked it up and it's pretty cheap on the NES.
The Chrono Trigger license expired? They have a DS remake though
