| Personally, no. My ########## is currently watching it, I've (passively) watched some with her. I don't get it. Probably because she was like 4 episodes in and she read the book whereas I didn't. I think the concept of the show is idiotic, but the execution/acting is alright.
The show is basically saying, "You need love to stop depression." Yeah, of course it helps, but you need to help yourself. It's completely missing the point of mental health awareness.
It's the ultimate, "revenge fantasy". The thinking, "Oh, if I cease to exist, THEY'LL PAY!" is one of the most narrow minded, selfish, and idiotic mindsets to ever exist. And there are a lot of stupid things out there.
This, "Revenge fantasy" is a fantasy for a reason - it doesn't work. It ruins lives, and screws over everybody, including yourself.
Besides, people are saying the book was better. However, the acting is good I hear. So I guess it's alright.

agree about the execution, some of those scenes are really powerful
also ppl were saying stuff like it was romanticizing depression/mental illness and stuff and is an issue towards young teens; they cited studies linking people who watch others attempting harmful acts to them actually doing it themselves and saying the show is a risk factor |

Precisely. This show comes from the snowball effect that...certain websites (cough) have created.
It's the whole, "depression is beautiful" mindset, and it's not only delusional, but extremely dangerous. It's not alright to hurt yourself, and it's certainly not alright to end it.
Depression isn't beautiful, it's horrific. And this show makes people think that ending it is a normal, easy solution to either get back at people or to get away from problems.
I have a strong moral opposition to the basis of this show, as previously stated. I think they could've done a much better job with that, and still have a compelling story.

Personally, I don't like the show for many reasons. But I think the "depression is beautiful" approach is rather neat, although it is completely overused and edgy, but when done right, it seems like a breath of fresh air. The show portrays it incorrectly and I prefer the book much more than the movie, the book is much deeper and ominously mysterious, which adds.
I've written scripts, plays, stories on a lot of topics, I think the "depression is beautiful" approach is what I call home, but I don't over emphasize it to the point where it is unbearable like show. I do it to create a dark and evil atmosphere, that'll make you say "Holy neck this kid is going through a lot." |
