The joke. The aim of this kind of joke is to demonstrate the humour that can result from changing a word to a different, related word that means something completely different ie. Right -> Left, Alright -> Alleft. eg. alright means that everyone is calm and content, compared to alleft which could mean that everyone is running around screaming, confused and covered in butter.
Why is it not funny? However, the joke doesn't work because all-left/al-eft/alleft doesn't mean anything. It's not a word. It doesn't exist. Therefore, there is no kind of clever wordplay involved; no pun-type humour can be derived from it. The change from "Al(right)" to "Al(left)" is completely arbitrary and doesn't have any kind of ironic or special meaning.
Why is it so funny to us? The reason that the people who watch this video find it so funny is: Comedy is often about drastically negating expectations, and instead of the hilarious routine we were expecting, we got the complete opposite - one really bad joke that made no sense. Delivered with complete confidence. Plus, it's "so bad, it's good" |
