Yeah, but I'd prefer native games.

'then get windows' No way I'd install that. No. Not unless Microsoft releases the source code, makes it free, and allows free modification and redistribution, which will _never_ happen.
The point of Linux for gaming is that the operating system can be fine-tailored to specifically reduce overhead from the system directly, ie, less IPC overhead, less time spent with the CPU for graphics drivers, etc. etc.

I'd just like to interject for a moment.
What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself: it can only function in the context of a complete operating system.
Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

If only Nvidia and other companies supported Linux instead of not caring about it at all.
I would change from Windows 10 back to Linux Mint, again. |

Yeah.
NVidia's proprietary drivers are pretty damn good, it's just that they're well, proprietary, and they have the most painful installation process humanly possible. Well, it could be worse, it could be like doing Linux without an init system and being a usable OS, like you had to once upon a long time ago (circa kernel 0.12).
Linus was all 'what do you mean i need an init process?'
Nouveau comes preeetty close to matching it actually, being only 5x slower or something like that, but 5x slower is too much for games, vastly outweighing performance increases from Linux being monolithic.
My problem with the proprietary drivers is that without the source, I can't optimize my games for their drivers.
Nouveau doesn't support Vulkan either, which is a *big* red flag for me, all of my 3D anything runs off Vulkan. I don't do OpenGL anymore. I'm not maintaining a separate backend just for open source drivers.
i know Linus was joking, but microkernels are absolutely stupid and are the result of serious brain damage if your filesystem crashes thats you know a bad thing that should result in a kernel panic before you start overwriting your####t###########just saying
nvidia makes their money off designing and selling graphics cards what is the point of closed source drivers? |
