I will say it firsthand, that this subforum is a bad place to learn. In fact, I came here once before learning how to script-- and that was three years before I actually started to learn. I really learned on my own, with aid from examples on the now-broken Wiki.
You will learn almost nothing here, especially if you take the generic route and ask overly specific questions. Such is because with copying and pasting you never understand the mechanics behind your script, and Lua, the underlying language on which you base them. Losing sight of that skill, or rather, never having it in the first place, utterly hinders your ability to learn and work for yourself.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that you definitely shouldn't start off learning on the Scripters subforum. This is a place where one should probably discuss performance, scripting techniques and general computer science, not how to make a microwavable Hot Pocket for your next Big City Life Simulator.
So please, don't ask us to do something, like "teach" you how to make a script for a cafe. Nine times out of ten, if we tell you how to _go about_ making the script, the response will be, "uh, so how would I script that?" That kind of slothful behavior is detrimental to your own learning and is something incredibly shameful. |

Of course this isn't the place to learn Lua. This is where you go when you get stuck on an error you can't seem to fix and you want someone to tell you how much of an idiot you are.

This is the place where real questions get 10 wrong answers by people who have probably never posted here before someone who actually knows the answer responds.
Question askers beware. |

Actually, this is the perfect place to learn.
How I learned: Try to make a script on my own > consult here > apply to my script and remember for next time.
Learning is about asking questions, and this is the perfect place for it. However, there are ignorant people who are not quite as patient. |

Sounds like you're condemning this forum because you can't understand it.
I learned most of what I know from resources on this forum, and almost all of what I know from the people on here.
If you think this forum is a bad pace to learn, you are imperceptive and boorish. Plenty of great scripters contribute here, and if their replies "don't make sense" to you.

*if their replies don't make sense to you, learn the fundaments.
If you go around with the mindset that "this is a bad place to learn," you aren't doing yourself any favors. How about, instead of trashposting, compile resources that YOU think are better than this forum for learning RbxLua and studio technique.

Also "examples on the now-broken Wiki." really? the now-broken wiki? Are you continuing to use deprecated methods or do you just get your pantaloons in a bunch when there is an outdated function in the example?
"You will learn almost nothing here, especially if you take the generic route and ask overly specific questions." .. really?? So you want people to ask general questions about their problem? Not get specific with the details?
I find this post so disagreeable and pretentious on so many levels, it was a mistake to write this. You're not even making a claim! You're putting yourself on an imaginary pedestal, saying this is a terrible place to learn, while NOT ACTUALLY DISCUSSING THAT.
Instead, you tell them "how" to ask questions, but your advice is TOTALLY whack! Specific questions are what we want, at least, they're what I want as one of the most active contributors to this forum, so don't be outraged on MY behalf, thank you very much. I discuss this idea at length through a far more auspicious post here:

| Yeah, copying and pasting will get you no where in terms of learning how to program. If you feel at all comfortable using someone else's code without knowing how it works, there is something wrong with you. Blindly using someone else's code is basically saying "I'm done growing, there's no hope for me to get better." Which is a horrible attitude when you're trying to improve at something. The only way you get better is actively thinking about what it is you're doing, and why you're doing it. |

Abstract you seem to forget that most of the people who come to ask questions on this forum do so for an answer that they can put into practice, not to learn and grow themselves. The whole psych 101 idea of mastery vs performance goals applies nicely here.

But I don't disagree with you, in that if you are TRYING to learn that copying someone's code block is generally unhelpful to your understanding. Follow that thread I linked in my previous-previous post, we talk about this extensively.

This sums up my experience with this forum. I've learned a lot here. |

This place is great to learn from, if you:
- Want to learn - Get shouted at enough
This place is not great to learn from (as is the case with anywhere) if you do not actually intend on learning. If you just want to go A to B without caring how you got there, you'll never be able to find your way again. |

I've learned how to script by looking at free models, uncopylocked games To see how the function or the roblox forum was also a very big hit.
Another way you could learn is by going to the wiki, don't copy and paste, but Look at the script and reprinte it.
