| She won by 4.3 million in california and 1.7 million in New york, if Hillary didn't win by a landslide in these two states guess what ### ######## HAVE THE POPULAR VOTE. The fact is manhattan, South western california, seattle, Philadelphia, and the Norther Eastern U.S should not control who becomes president or what policy dictates the rest of the nation. |

The Electoral College is more representative.
Generally speaking more Democrats live in the large cities, and large cities have high populations.
The Democratic stronghold states have a higher population than the Republican stronghold states.
If it was solely by popular vote, Republicans would never win an election and the voice of half the country would never be heard as we would only be catering to those living in the cities, and anyone else would be left in the dark.

So why should the votes of cities be disregarded compared to rural areas?

"Were not disregarding the cities votes, were just saying they shouldn't dictate the policy of the nation it should be a equal with the rural areas."
So swing states should dictate the policy of the nation? Cities largely outnumber rural areas so it makes sense that they should get the power.
Put 1 million people in 1 state but 20 people in the other 49 states, the lower population wins because you are trying to give areas the vote, not the actual voters.

The wishes of the people in the major cities is not representative of the entire country's wishes.
"Put 1 million people in 1 state but 20 people in the other 49 states, the lower population wins because you are trying to give areas the vote, not the actual voters."
Disregarding the strawman population you presented, 800,000 people across 49 states rather than 1m in 1 state deserves more representation, because you're representing 49 different states rather than 1. Pretty simple.

No, rural states have too much power. Its unfair that they automatically get 3 electoral votes stolen from other states.
We are a representative democracy, meaning that the government should correlate with the population. If a bigger portion of the country is urbanized its not fair that you get to take their votes away.
Seeing that urbanized states contribute a bigger share of the economy, employment, and innovation I don't see why we need to pay welfare to these republican rural states |

"We are a representative democracy, "
And we represent the entire country, rather than a part of it.

An electoral system made over 200 years ago should not dictate proper democracy.
The fact that over 2.5 million Americans voted for clinton over trump, shows how flawed the system is. In many states it was a matter of <0.9% to which it would flip. |

Ok, then Democrats would win every single election because a handful of states combined have more say than nearly double the number of states than them. Is THAT representative?
Our country would be dictated by the wishes of California and New York, and almost that alone.
You talk of swing states deciding elections, but go by popular vote and the only people getting attention are the major population centers. What's the difference, then?

I'm not saying I agree with the fact that a Republican's vote in California is meaningless. But your suggestion is even more meaningless because it'd be the same thing.
A Democrat in West Virginia would have no luck with his vote, just as a Republican in New York.
Instead of catering to a few swing states, candidates would cater to just the major cities and population centers.

| ^ Your not understanding, what works in a city may not work in a ruural area and since there are more rural areas it isn't necesarily fair if cities control everything. |

Okay, but you're saying the entire country should be dictated by what works for people in San Fran, NYC, or LA. That doesn't apply to people in WV or any place like it, just those places.

As Alekz said, how is it the United States if over half the states' opinions are irrelevant?

It works because practically every other representative democracy uses the same system. We're the odd ball out.
Certain states have a higher population for a reason, and having just a popular vote would mean states wouldn't matter, one vote for one person.
I don't think its fair that a person in Arizona has the voting power of 31 voters in California. |
