Today's NFC Championship Game today between the Falcons and Packers will be played during the PDS Tornado Watch as a very intense storm system should pass over Georgia and the northern half of Florida today. PDS tornado watches are very rare and only issued 3-4 times a year out of a possible 150 tornado watches. I remember parts of Oklahoma and north/central Texas had a PDS tornado watch last year
Just giving you guys a heads-up that the game might be stopped at random times because of the possibility of a tornado |

this has happened before it got struck by a tornado during I think the 2008???? SEC tournament and the dome really didn't hold up all that well.
also during that game if a crazy shot didn't send the game to overtime thousands of people would have been exiting the stadium as the tornado hit |

| I don't think that dome would be secure enough to hold a big tornado, hypothetically speaking. @cheesey |

WHY THIS IS OCCURRING: Spinning low-pressure system located in southern Arkansas is creating high wind conditions for the majority of Texas, with winds of 25-40 mph and gusts of 40-65 mph, and this is pushing the jet stream system to create storms with intense tornadoes with EF5 potential and a big derecho with winds of 80+ mph for the southeast, including Georgia and Florida.

Here's a good definition from the Wikipedia article:
"PDS tornado watches are issued when there is a higher than normal risk of multiple strong to violent tornadoes – especially those that are predicted to be long-track in nature, with path lengths of more than 20 miles – in the watch area (usually amounting to damage consistent with EF4 or EF5 tornadoes), in addition to including significant wind and hail damage. This enhanced wording in a Tornado Watch is meant to alert the public of the potential for very life-threatening severe weather. While there are no set criteria for a PDS watch to be issued, they are usually issued when the potential exists for a major tornado outbreak. These types of tornado watches represent about 90% of PDS watches issued by the Storm Prediction Center. PDS Tornado Watches are often issued on high risk days for severe weather." |

TL;DR:
Basically when there's supposed to be a long line of storms 100+ miles long that is supposed to spread 250+ miles outward with a very high risk of EF2+ tornadoes, including the EF5 "town-erasers". None of the ##### EF0 pencil tornadoes. In addition, very large hail and winds of 80-100 mph are possible |

| Regular tornado watches are still important because they still pose the potential to produce these town-erasers, but probably the biggest difference is confidence. When PDS watches are issued, there is an extremely high level of confidence (today it is 95%) that there WILL be violent tornadoes, massive hail, and fierce winds. |

"sir hurricane give me the run down on the weather in the Tampa Bay Area I've heard it's gonna be rough"
All of the Tampa metro and portions of the Orlando metro could very well be getting a PDS Tornado Watch very soon. Same threats but trends have been showing that it COULD be worse... |
