Personal opinions ahead, buckle up.

I. Less convenient than previous "plug and play" consoles

Perhaps the biggest and by far the most important advantage that a console has over a PC is convenience. One can go to the store, buy the console with a few games, and go home and be playing after plugging in a few cables. That's not necessarily true anymore. Now, console owners have to sit through hours of system updates, mandatory game installs, and outages of PSN and Xbox Live.

II. Shorter lifespans/mid generation upgrades

Another cornerstone of the console experience is that everyone has one set of hardware, making development easier and ensuring party of performance between all gamers.

With the release of the PS4 Pro and the rumored Xbox One "Scoripo", this is going away. These improved consoles mean that your initial purchase won't last very long before its replaced and potentially needing of an upgrade. With the New 3DS and the original 3DS, the precedent of new games running poorly on the older versions has already been set and could potentially make its way to the PS4 and the XB1.

III. Losing value versus PC gaming

Every day, hardware for gaming becomes cheaper and cheaper. Today, a capable CPU for gaming only costs $70 (Pentium G4560) and a good GPU for modern AAA titles will only run you $100 while still getting great performance.

While building or buying a PC will be more expensive than a console, the PC saves money elsewhere. One doesn't have to pay for PSN or XBOX Live to play online, and sales for games are much more common. In addition, the PC has more uses in itself than a game console and has more access to gaming related content such as mods and emulators.

IV. Decline of exclusives

Exclusive titles have become less and less important to consumers as multiplatform titles sell much more and come out more often. Both Sony and Microsoft's exclusive game series have been declining in popularity, hype, and critical success recently, with most gamers deciding that Halo or Crash Bandicoot is no longer must get games. Nintendo's exclusives still enjoy critical success, but they do not release enough of them quickly enough for them to sustain a console platform.

"less convenient"
nintendo consoles and most handhelds are a /huge/ exception to this
if something needs to be installed, it'll normally not go anywhere north of 8 minutes

"shorter lifespans"
can't argue much with this one, although wiiu and psvita didn't get upgrades

"losing value"
expensive hardware - knowing the path gaming is taking, prices for up-to-standard PC hardware will increase as well with all this 4k stuff happening
paid online play - can't really argue with that one as of now, it wasn't a problem in the past
mods and emulators - microsoft and nintendo consoles supported mods, and emulators aren't progressing at all, seeing how people still have trouble emulating an original xbox

"decline of exclusives"
sony exclusives are still holding up
i hope you know there are more nintendo exclusives that their first-party titles

@skebby

the newest console introduced to emulation was the 3ds
even so, wiiu emulators are still experimental, and emulators for ps3 and any xboxes don't exist
i'm pretty sure newer arcade boards are having problems in emulation as well

XBONE is the absolute best consoles to run emulators on rn
running emulators are very easy if you have a visual studio license
but if you're still not convinced, an emulator called NESbox is officially on the XBOX Store.

PS3 can get a OFW to run retroarch
3DS can get a CFW to run retroarch
Wii U can get a CFW (dspfirmware for full sound functionality) to run retroarch

there is citra, a 3ds emulator, and cemu, a wii u emulator

protocols from consoles are either ported or emulated to computers
like PS4 connectivity with the DS4
or the PS3 version of share play

protocols
like the ps4 connectivity with ds4
or the ps3 version of share play

the only reason why the ps3 isn't hacked because it literally has no hacking community, unlike the psvita or the 3ds

I though PSN and Xbox Live weren't required, but only required to go online

"also there is a psvita emulator"

even so, it's probably annoying because the vita uses one to two touchscreens for some games and motion sensors

"I notice that my enjoyment of nintendo consoles have gone down, steam is starting to become my best friend :P"

While I had the most enjoyment on the Wii U and the 3DS, and I never played any of my 16 games I bought during the winter sale.
