Mutants have been a playable "race" in ATF since the first game. Mutants are the result of the post flash virus known as RAD-X. The virus comes in eight strains which are classified and covered with in the lore.
Treatment ———————————————————————————————————————
By ATF 5, a full blown vaccine is developed. This prevents people from being infected with RAD-X, and will stop mutated individuals from progressing into further stages of the virus at if their stage is RAD-5 or lower. Higher levels cannot be treated as they are classified as feral mutants.
Deradiators are used to temporarily prevent exposure to the virus in high risk areas, in games ATF 1 and ATF 2.
There is nothing in game that reverses the effects of the virus. The vaccine only stops it from occuring in the first place, or stopping further exposure. There is no cure.
Classification ——————————————————————————————————————— The numbers next to the name represent the severity of the strain.
Low class: These forms of the virus are classified as a simple infection. Flu like symptoms only occur, no direct physical changes. Mutation doesn't occur here. These individuals are considered "Intelligent". [RAD-1 RAD-2 and RAD-3]
Priority class: Those effected by these strains of the virus are considered mutated. The virus changed the physical characteristics of the individual. The symptoms of the virus will now begin to start limitng their five senses, physical ability and their mental capacity. They are considered Priority as this is the final stage before they turn to feral mutants, getting their name as they would be treated first at clinics. [RAD-4 and RAD-5]
Feral class: The final strains of the virus all begin to change the very chemistry of the individual. Feral mutants regress into sava########y are hostile to non mutated lower class mutants. They fight with their hands, and occasionally tools, and are incapable of thinking freely. Vaccination or Deradiators cannot help those in the Feral Class.
Some forms of feral mutants exist, generally with their own characteristics and weaknesses. Lower feral mutants have the capacity to command and direct ferals. Mutation can now heavily change the physical appearance, such as extremely large limbs. Forms of the mutants can also shoot the virus in spore form at non afflicted. [RAD-6 RAD-7 and RAD-8]
Other Information ——————————————————————————————————————— The lore factions in early ATFs (1-3) most likely killed all forms of mutated persons on sight. The development of a vaccine allows for the factions to instead turn their attention on any remaining feral mutants and instead spare the less afflicted.
The only way to contract the virus is to have the virus physically inserted into you or to have come in contact with areas where the virus is rampant. It is not airborne.
The virus does not in any way enhance the physical properties of someone. Increased height, speed, etc. are simply not possible. The effects of the Virus range from the symptoms of a common cold to having your body under attack from the plague. Skin and hair color changes are possible, however they are only present in the Priority class. |
