The Many Types of Changes
There are many types of changes. They could be linked to time, natural or man-made, it can be positive or negative, it can be perceived as orderly or random- it’s everywhere! There are changes happening all around us. The clock might have been positioned on the right wall yesterday, and today it’s positioned on the left wall! There’s even change in our literature.
Think about The Wind In the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Toad loses “his” car. Afterwards, he goes to jail. Think about how negatively this affected him! Change can be positive or negative depending on the change. Suddenly, he gets freed! I think that’s positive.
Don’t forget about The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett! This tale displays many positive changes, such as Colin’s first steps. He never thought he could walk. He thought he would decease! He walked! He says in response to Dr. Craven’s visit: “He won’t get Misselthwaite at all not that I’m not going to die.” Isn’t that positive? He knew he wouldn’t die! To add on, Mr. Craven came home to see his son walk. That’s a great change! It led to a happy ending.
The Weaving of a Dream by Marilee Heyer represents many man-made and natural changes. One piece of evidence that shows this is when the fairy weaves herself into the quilt. It was her choice. It was a man-made change, unlike the mother’s quilt turning into a very real exquisite world. The eldest brothers getting some money? Their choice- just like them becoming poor beggars. If they wouldn’t have spent that money, they would still be rich.
The Japanese folktale “The Old Man and His Affectionate Son” allows people to reflect on some very orderly changes. The man becomes old. What’s next? He’s outlawed! When he becomes outlawed, the son refuses to leave his side. Since the son refuses to leave his side, the old man helps him win the competition! When the boy admits to cheating in tears, the competition holder decided that it was time to change. Elders were no longer outlawed. It all goes in a sequenced order.
So many changes that go with so many stories! There are positive and negative changes, as reflected through The Wind and the Willows and The Secret Garden. There are also changes that could be either natural or made by humans, as made manifest through The Weaving of a Dream, such as the fairy weaving herself into the old mother’s quilt. To add on, “The Old Man and His Affectionate Son” views sequenced changes. There are many types of changes- and they aren’t limited to the location of clocks.

| On my state test essay I wrote my name on the paper, erased it, flipped it over and wrote my name in giant letters in kindergarten. |
