5. Cincinnati Bengals (6-9-1). Cincinnati quietly had one of the more disappointing seasons in the NFL. Expectations have never been astronomical league-wide for this team, but this was a team that was looking to make the Playoffs for the 6th straight year (Although in the previous 5 years the Bengals had failed to win a Playoff game). Instead, the Bengals finished with a losing record while Andy Dalton had a mediocre 17-8 TD-INT ratio. Cincinnati boasted the league's 7th best run defense a year ago, but finished 22nd in that category this year (The ranking could adjust slightly depending upon Detroit's performance tonight). After beginning the season 2-4, Cincinnati failed to gain momentum, tying Washington at home before losing 3 straight to knock them far out of the Playoff picture.
4. Minnesota Vikings (8-8). The Vikings could easily be higher on the list, but the fact that they only made it to the Wild Card Round last year while the Top (Or bottom) three teams on this list made it to AT LEAST their respective conference championships keeps Minnesota a bit higher. All in all, the season wasn't a complete disaster. The Vikings lost starting QB Teddy Bridgewater in the preseason, and had to settle on Sam Bradford as the starting QB. However, if this list was based on how teams began the season compared to how they finished it, the Vikes would be #1. After starting 5-0, Minnesota collapsed, losing 8 of their last 11. While injuries played a factor, great teams overcome injuries. With their Playoff hopes on the line at the end of the season, the Vikings got blown out by Indianapolis at home as well as Green Bay.
3. Denver Broncos (9-7). The Broncos are the only team on this list to finish with a winning record, and manage to stay above Arizona because, unlike the Cardinals, Denver lost 2 QBs. After winning Super Bowl 50, the Broncos have missed the Playoffs. Sure, losing their two main quarterbacks from 2015 may have lowered expectations a bit, but the fact of the matter is that Peyton Manning didn't play very well last year, and the front office thought they could replace Brock Osweiler. The front office had fans believing that there was a viable QB option on the roster for Denver. Instead, Trevor Seimian finished with a pedestrian 16-9 TD-INT ratio, and under 3,200 passing yards. A year removed from winning the Lombardi, the Broncos finished 3rd in their division.
2. Arizona Cardinals (7-8-1). Arizona was one of the top 4 teams in the NFL last year, and had a legitimate MVP candidate in Carson Palmer when he threw for 4,671 yards. Instead of making another run at the award, ######## ###### ratio went from 35-15 to 23-13. Arizona had the league's 5th best defense in 2015 in yards against. A year after leading the league in offensive net yards, the Cardinals dropped from scoring 30.6 ppg to 24.9, a drastic dropoff. Playing in arguably the weakest division in the NFL, Arizona still failed to finish with a winning record. AZ failed to beat Seattle at home when Chandler Catanzaro missed a 24 yard field goal in overtime. Even at the end of the season, with their Playoff hopes on the line, Arizona played sloppy in Miami and then lost at home to New Orleans.
1.Carolina Panthers (6-10). Carolina lost 9 more regular season games than they did last year. That's a .5625 dropoff in winning percentage. The Panthers went from being the NFC's best team by a landslide to being the worst team in their division. Cam Newton won the MVP in 2015 yet barely threw for over 3,000 yard this year. One year after having one of the league's most daunting defenses, the Panthers finished as the worst defense against the pass. All of this came with only one major personnel loss, and few notable personnel acquisitions from division foes.
Dishonorable mentions
-New York Jets (5-11). A year after posting a 10 win season, New York finished last in the AFC East. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw more picks than touchdowns, and Head Coach Todd Bowles has come under fire from the New York media.
-Houston Texans (9-7). It might seem asinine to have a Playoff team here, but Houston failed to reach 10 wins in the AFC's weakest division. Brock Osweiler signed a $72 mil. contract only to throw more INTs than TDs and get demoted to backup QB.
-Los Angeles Rams (4-12). Expectations were never high for the Rams after a 7-9 2015 finish. Still, finishing 1-7 at home in the inaugural season back in LA doesn't exactly attract fans. What makes things worse is rookie QB Jarrod Goff's terrible play and the front office's poor handling of Jeff Fisher. |
