It's just an extra game the teams play. If a team plays better, they get in a better bowl game. Playing in a better bowl game means more pride, looks better for recruits, better prizes/cash for the players/university, etc.
They've been around for nearly 100 years now |

| Same as going to school. 4 years, Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, And Senior. Unless you're redshirted. (getting to stay on the team one more time after missing a season) |

"also how many seasons to university players play?"
Once you finish your senior season you must leave.
Here are the class ranks:
Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior
For each season you play you move up a rank. If you want to save a year to perhaps learn some offense or take time off for an injury or personal matter, you can use a "redshirt" which basically gives you a year to sit on the sidelines and just learn, while not moving up a rank. There are also "medical redshirts" for players who suffer a big injury (season-long) and have already used their redshirt.
College players must spend a minimum of 3 seasons in NCAAF to enter the NFL Draft.
So college players can play anywhere from 3-6 seasons, the most typical being 5 years using a redshirt. |

Mr. Braxton Miller is a great example of this. |

| Yep, and 2 that always stick out in my mind are Jordan Shipley (Texas) and Case Keenum (Houston). Both got a 6th season, Shipley becoming a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award and Keenum becoming the all-time passing leader. |

@Case
The people who play 2 seasons and go to the NFL have already taken a redshirt, a la they are redshirt sophomores. A true sophomore can't enter the draft though. |

Bowl games are basically two conferences playing against each other.
To make a bowl game, you have to win atleast 6 games (unless there is not enough teams that won 6 games.
The team that wins gets a certain amount of money for their conference which is distributed through the conference. |
