| I am but even I dunno how to explain their ways. Probably has to do with their nickname being the farm and the university has tons of trees across its vast campus. Also hard to have a mascot on the color red. |

a quick google search says that stanford adopted cardinal as its primary athletic color after their win over Cal in the first Big Game in 1892 they used to be the Indians (1930 - 1972) but then it was removed by a student vote for being offensive thus their "mascot" is the color crimson because they have no living being as the mascot (similar to other schools like Dartmouth's Big Green and Harvard's Crimson) the stanford tree is not a mascot but instead a recurring tradition in the Stanford Band; it is based on the tree "El Palo Alto" located in nearby Palo Alto which appears on Stanford's seal and logo
