What do you think people are born with knowledge on the subject? I learnt through these forums. There are some people who are very knowledgeable on PC Hardware here, and people want they're help and this is a good place for that. It's people helping other people. It's about gaming anyways - and people get to talk about their hobby, which is PC gaming. It's on topic. If you can't understand it then try and learn from it.

Also, you two are being pretty hypocritical, you want to talk about games and you don't want to see posts about people building PC's and stuff that you think isn't relevant - yet i've seen like 3 or 4 posts on here about "stop talking about PC's your polluting the forum" - probably more than there are actual pc posts. You're exaggerating and being kinda insolent. You want to talk about games? So do we, so why not make posts about games then?

Computer specs are a pretty important part of playing video games on a computer so of course they're gonna be talked about here.

I don't know how to read them either, all I know is that I have "1.93 GB" of something called "RAM" that apparently helps with high quality videos and images

Cool, time to learn :D !

CPU - Central Processing Unit, it's the brain of the computer. It is the real "computer" part, and it's extremely good at performing simple tasks like math between two numbers and reading memory from the RAM. It uses those abilities to make up most of the programs you use. Printing out "Hello world" on the screen is the result of hundreds of miniature calculations performed by the CPU.

CPU Clock Speed - Measured in hertz (mostly gigahertz or GHz) it's how many instructions the CPU can do in one second. Giga- means it's performing millions per second. Don't pay much attention to it, it's not really that important.

GPU - This is the thing you hear everyone talking about, the Graphics Processing Unit or the Graphics Card. It's like a CPU but it's dedicated completely to performing graphics tasks like transforming 3D objects, rendering scenes, lighting effects, etc.. These things are really really intense on the math and would blow out your CPU so the GPU does the work instead! Your framerate will still depend on the CPU though, so don't cheap out on anything.

RAM - Random Access Memory, it's a few gigabytes of memory that are meant to be accessed at any time extremely quickly. The words you see in a document you've typed without saving, the programs you have open, the location of the mouse, everything that you see right at this moment that isn't stored in the hard drive is in the RAM. It's also called "volatile memory" and if the PC is turned off any data in it is lost.

HDD - Hard Disk Drive, it's the hard drive of the computer and it stores data while the computer is turned off. All of your files are in the HDD!

SSD - Solid State Drive, it does the same thing but it's electrical instead of mechanical and uses circuits to store your data. It's more efficient, it's faster, and it's more resistant to damage, but it's also more expensive and not as powerful yet. They're used in laptops.

If you think it's boring then you can just ignore those posts, 9/10 posts on here are about video games.

Understanding the specs of a system you're gonna be playing games on and how the game can use different parts is a really important part of choosing a game and a computer. Ignoring what they mean and saying you *don't want to know* how your system works is pretty stupid. It might be a bit boring, but once you know everything makes a lot more sense.

I used to think that computer specs were extremely confusing and unnecessary. Now I'm a young computer technician and I build computers all the time.

You'll never know how much you like something until you actually try it

I dunno about you but as soon as I learned what a Graphics Card was and that I didn't have one and that's why I couldn't play games, I was really eager to learn more about them
