1 - -1 = 2 1 + 1 = 2
is subtracting -1 the same as adding 1?
no, it's not.
think of the number line as having +∞ and -∞ on each side
if you have ∞ + 1 on the positive side and ∞ on the negative side then you have 1.
if you subtract -1 you get ∞ + 2, ∞ - 1 if you add 1 then you get ∞ + 3, ∞
both ∞ + 3, ∞ and ∞ + 2, ∞ - 1 equal three
but the are not the same number
does this make sense?

come on!
it's a simple number line concept explaining why 2 - -1 =/= 2 + 1 even though you get the same result.

"no it's just a double negative which makes it a positive" don't be so sure
there are two options: negatives cancel one another and produce an affirmative or double negatives intensify the negation

"Lol, double negatives are childs play ;)"
this is proofs and concept of why double negative makes a positive

| i feel like this is making a simple concept unnecessarily complicated.... in basically any normal use, 2+1 and 2-(-1) are exactly the same thing |

that's what you do in order to prove something is true |
