| Maybe if they were the Quebec Nordiques this wouldn't have happened. |

| the logo doesnt really look similar and there are professional and college teams with similar or the same names as each other (example: Boston Bruins and UCLA Bruins) so its not like its impossible to work it out. |

They did not get sued, the USPTO aka the United States Patent and Trademark Office (which of course is the government agency used for trademarks, copyright marks, and patents, etc.) denied the request to trademark the name "Vegas Golden Knights". Just to let you guys know, the organizations who OWN the Golden Knights are the NHL, Black Knight Entertainment LLC (which was created by Vegas GM Bill Foley), and Adidas. They actually have until July 6th, so we might see the change from Golden Knights to Black Knights. The trademark issue with the NHL's new Vegas Golden Knights was the similarity of the wording, placement of the wording, and the name of the Golden Knights, making an issue with College of Saint Rose Golden Knights which is a private college in Albany, New York. The specific thing is the logo and name which violates section 2 of the USPTO which is "likelihood of confusing with a registered mark". The part that violates this is the logo, name, some of the wordmarks, and some of the secondary logos that have not been released to the public yet.
