state schools are better for me because they are close to family (less commute) and cheaper since I live in the state

| that and it isn't like you are guaranteed a super high paying job if you graduate from private schools or ivy league. |

| yeah that makes sense. i have a lot of friends who went to state schools since it ended up being cheaper. there are absolutely good state schools, like the UCs and UVA for example. they're just not better than pton/ivies lol. |

| @tix honestly, if you actually get a decent GPA and apply to internships early on (AKA don't wait until your a junior to start applying to things), getting a high-paying job is significantly easier as an ivy league student, esp. if you're willing to work in investment banking or consulting. those jobs are essentially closed off, with some exceptions, to the majority of schools that aren't "prestigious." |

@antonio i actually didn't have a perfect GPA. it was a 3.89/4.0 or a 4.8/5.0 on a weighted scale. my SAT score was a 2300. i studied a ton for my SATs (like took 10 practice tests). |

| also, schools like princeton only accept people if they do more than have high grades, so you better be able to prove that as well, |

there is almost zero difference between private universities and ivy league schools.
the only difference is the selection of those who are allowed to attend. you do almost the same coursework. it's just the type of people attending said schools that is the difference. harvard has had more us presidents than professional athletes. |

| nah i disagree. ivy league schools have way more resources and better professors. sure, it may be essentially the same coursework, but you likely learn at a faster pace and greater depth in ivy league schools and you get to work often directly with professors that are famous in their fields, at least if you go to a school that has a strong undergraduate focus like pton. also, the selection of those who are allowed to attend is critical. being surrounded by amazing, successful, ambitious peers will make a big difference. not to say they aren't found in private schools too, but just to a lesser extent. |

the higher student/staff ratio is a good point. but the same can be found at smaller universities.
but @ your other point calculus is calculus regardless of who's teaching it. |

| eh i agree that calculus is calculus no matter who's teaching it. but i will say that it is not the same coursework. calc 1 at princeton is actually a lot more in-depth and the tests are way harder than a lot of schools' classes. but in the more subjective, less straightforward fields, there's definitely a difference to be found. and once you get to the higher level math courses, there are just way, way more opportunities for math geeks to really delve into the field with independent research with renowned professors and subsidized trips and whatnot. |
