There were several factors that led up to the war, however nobody knows what that final spark was that put everything into motion.
In 2021, the nation of Turkey went into crisis. The nation withdrew from its member status in NATO to pursue more peaceful relations with Syria, Iran, and Russia. Many civilians in the nation disagreed with the government's decisions, as it seemed the nation was slowly becoming less democratic with each passing year. The leaders of the nation had been concerned about their place in power ever since the failed coup d'etat in 2016. Rebellious groups and certain military personnel rallied together to overthrow the nation’s government in a new coup. However, it too failed. The nation was thrown into civil war. Many groups against the government fled to the west of the nation, where they received support from NATO. The front lines were drawn near the centre of the nation, and the war began in 2022. It lasted for two years before the east and west made peace, and the west seceded from the rest of the nation, becoming West Turkey, a democratic state that joined the EU and NATO.
Earlier, however, in 2017, NATO began its Baltic Defense Program, led by Canada, the United States, Germany, and Great Britain. The plan was to deploy thousands of troops in the Baltic States, Poland, and Ukraine in an attempt to divert Russian aggression out of Europe and stabilize the war-torn regions from rebel groups. However, the attempt at creating stability only increased the instability and the paranoia among the civilian populations and the Russian government. Four years after, in 2021, the Union of Common Defense[ UCD ]was formed to oppose NATO in a unified organization under the command of Russia and China. The UCD consisted of almost 40 nations from 4 different continents.
Then, in 2023, the movement of nuclear weapons from Russia to Kaliningrad and Crimea threatened NATO’s presence in Eastern Europe, and the United States responded by deploying more of their nuclear arsenal in West Turkey, Poland, and Estonia. Naval vessels from UCD countries sailed for the coast of the DRC, while a small amount of ships moved to the Kaliningrad Oblast and the coast of Algeria in the Mediterranean Sea. A French Spec. Ops team sent to recon the ports where these ships were docked almost started the war 3 years early, known as the African Conflict of 2023. However, they were able to escape with minor casualties and consequences.
The war began in 2026, with troops storming several nations across Europe, mainly Poland, Estonia, and West Turkey. NATO and EU forces were quick to respond and defend their allies from the powerful UCD. Battleships rained down firestorms on the coasts of Poland and the Baltic's. Within weeks, dozens of kilometers worth of land in northern Poland was under UCD occupation. Captured troops were conscripted into the UCD as well as most male civilians between 18 and 24.
The story begins, 2026. It is early into the Polish invasion. The small coastal city of Grizdal is under attack from UCD forces. A Russian warship is anchored just offshore, and is ordered to hit the city with artillery strikes. There is a Polish Air Base in this city, and it is used as a Forward Operating Base for the NATO troops deployed in this region. Most civilians have been evacuated, however those left are forced to adapt to the new conditions, or be killed in the conflict.
