my boy james madison worried about what he called “factions,” or groups of people who have a common interest in some proposal that would either violate the rights of other citizens or would harm the nation entirely.
his fear, which Tocqueville later dubbed “the tyranny of the majority”, was that a faction could grow to encompass more than 50 percent of the population, at which point it could “sacrifice to its ruling passion or interest both the public good and the rights of other citizens.”
but if you remember, the original founding fathers didn't exactly put the emphasis on "the people", but more or less the states. the electoral absolutely protects the interest of the states, as they elect who to give their points to. besides, most if not all states are bound to voting parallel to the popular vote of their state.
democracy isn't perfect and is often a slippery slope. with the electoral college, you have to appeal to all people and all states. you can't just appeal to white males only while everyone else hates you, win that 60-40 margin, and go home. most of the swing states are small, irrelevant states with little to no importance to the general wellness of the union. but with the electoral college, their voice is heard.
too long didnt read -
if you nutheads just went off popular vote, small states and minorities wouldn't be represented. this is the same argumentative basis found in the great compromise, which formed the house and senate |

Never realized how important the electoral college was until just recently.
Still on the fence about it, though. |
