At the end of the semester we have to get into groups, design an experiment or study, perform it, and share our results with the class. My group elected to test whether or not dogs' mouths really are cleaner than humans' mouths.
I have to now go around campus and find people to swab. Hopefully students won't be disgusted by it and I won't creep anyone out by asking for a sample.

Yes, you're the only one. HS is in "collage" not college. |

That's actually a really awesome experiment idea. This is something I actually looked into before, and the answer is actually pretty interesting. I won't say it here so you aren't spoiled (I don't know about you, but I treat experiment results like plot twists at the end of fiction sometimes), but I think you'd probably be pretty intrigued by the results. There is certainly a difference, I'll tell you that much, but what the difference actually is may surprise you.

@Dapper
I am curious about the results, because I have always been told that human mouths harbor more bacteria than dog mouths, but I've remained a bit skeptical of that claim.
My professor has shared a couple of really interesting results with us that past students have gotten from various experiments. One group a few years ago decided to test how coffee affected plant growth. To their surprise, the coffee actually improved plant growth.

"What if the gum has acid in it"
I mean, pure saliva can be slightly acidic. It can be sliiiightly basic too depending on the person's diet, but most people have a mostly acidic diet.

"What if the gum has acid in it"
Saliva technically is a very weak acid with a pH of 6.5 (for adults; children have a saliva pH of 7.5, making theirs slightly basic).
Obviously that kind of acid isn't damaging the gums, but I would imagine that if you poured hydrochloric acid on them (pH of 3, making it a strong acid), it would cause some serious damage.

I'll tell you this; the claim didn't come from nothing. It is based in fact, but it's a bit distorted. It's like it went through a big game of telephone, and people misinterpreted it. ALRIGHT. THAT'S ALL I'LL SAY. I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL IT.
"My professor has shared a couple of really interesting results with us that past students have gotten from various experiments. One group a few years ago decided to test how coffee affected plant growth. To their surprise, the coffee actually improved plant growth."
Oh yeah, that was actually a "myth" that ended up being true. Caffeine itself is still being tested to see if it improves plant growth. Some people say it does, some people say there's no difference, and some people say it makes it worse. Coffee as a whole contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and potassium, which DEFINITELY help plants grow faster and larger. It's an expensive way to fertilize your plants, but it works. It increases the acidity of the soil though, so you usually have to counter it with something else.

Time for me to test it myself. I'll need seeds, coffee, soda, energy drinks, caffeine that isn't in anything (just pure caffeine), water, and I'm probably missing some stuff because of all the ideas running through my brain right now. I'll also need permission from the university to access the greenhouse. And time, of course.
And my grandmother used to use coffee on her rosebushes to help them grow. When I was younger I initially thought it was one of her old wives' tales (she believed quite a few of them).
