If it builds up between your lungs and your chest wall, that's called pleural effusion, which has been known to cause collapsed lungs (similar to pneumothorax). If fluid is IN your lungs, that's what's known as a pulmonary edema. This is when your air alveoli fill with fluid, as opposed to air like they naturally do. Many acute and chronic diseases can cause this, one of which is pneumonia. It isn't inherently fatal, but it can significantly impact the amount of oxygen your body receives. If left untreated, it can (and has) killed people.
