Actually Halloween can trace its roots back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.

Halloween doesn't have any backstory? Are you kidding? It has one of the richest and most interesting histories of any holiday. The Celts, who lived in what is now modern-day Ireland 2000 years ago, had their version of the New Year on November 1st. It was believed that leading into the new year (October 31st, which they referred to as Samhain), the border between life and death were blurry, which allowed spirits from the world of the dead to sort of spill into our own. While these spirits were thought to destroy crops (which was an explanation for why many crops begin to die in the Fall), the Celts believed that they also granted abilities to see into the future. To assist the Druids in predicting the future and to appease their deities, they sacrificed animals and crops by throwing them into fires. They also wore costumes (which were usually just animal hides), which is mostly where the Halloween tradition of dressing up comes from. After the Romans conquered the modern-day Ireland territory, Samhain, Feralia, and Pomona sort of mixed together. The Samhain/Feralia/Pomona holiday was adopted by Christianity, and was dedicated to saints and martyrs. So contrary to popular belief, it isn't necessarily satanic.

Halloween is glorious! I actually get to dress up however I want and not get judged! It's a miracle! It's the one time of year I can wear a cape and cool steampunk goggles and not get called a freak! HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT? |

Candy and fat do not go together. You have to actually put yourself into that position and eat WAYY more than kids do on Halloween. This argument is not viable.

Well, the tradition of giving out candy is derived, at least in part, from the sacrifice of crops and animals to calm the deities and spirits. Many of the Roman traditions also involved giving offerings to the spirits, as well as to other people, so that's mostly what it's derived from. As for the holiday's relevance, it was quite relevant to them at the time. I'm not sure what you mean by "irrelevant", or if you're just throwing it in there because it sounds cool. The festival was NOT irrelevant during its inception, but I guess you could maybe argue the point that Halloween doesn't really serve a purpose anymore. The point wasn't even the relevance of the holiday in the modern day, though. The point was that it DOES have a backstory.
