Ranstin was on his mount next to you, his black mare keeping canter next to your own. The two of you had been riding for a few days now and had crossed the perilous mountains to the West a mere day ago. You were now headed for the village of Marka.
"We'll be arriving soon," Ranstin called out to you. "We'll grab a room at the inn for tonight then be off to Asbedus where we'll meet our client," he informs you, the village coming into sight now. |

The worst part of this particular journey is over now. I'm glad to be out of those mountains. The cold never took much of a liking to me. I can't wait to be able to sleep in a warm, cozy place again. Hopefully, the inn is a nice enough place.
I nod to Ranstin and keep up pace with him. I never actually spoke to him very much. Thinking about it now, I never spoke much to anyone at all. Maybe I just don't have anything to say, or maybe it's something else.
I toy with the Cat medallion hanging from my neck, then move my fingers from the cold metal to the warm wood of the heart necklace. I'm surprised that hasn't rotted away by now. I'm glad though, it's one of the few sources of comfort I have.
I move my hand back to the reins of my horse and continue trotting with Ranstin to the village, keeping my head down in an attempt to not catch any dirty looks from people who aren't awfully fond of Witchers.

You arrive at the inn's stables and both you and Ranstin slide off your mounts. You each loosen your horses saddles as to not pain the horses anymore. It had been a long journey; they deserved some rest.
You enter the inn alongside Ranstin, night the sun having set about an hour earlier. Once inside, Ranstin turns to you.
"Would you prefer we get a few drinks before sleeping or would you rather go now?" he asks you. |

I can't even think about drinks right now. The cold hasn't worn off me yet. I just need to curl up in bed and go to sleep. Besides, I'm not much of a drinker anyway.
With luck, the beds here won't be too shabby. Even if they are, it's better sleeping in them than being out in the cold of the mountains. Oh, the sacrifices I have to make just for a bit of cold. Sometimes, I think braving the elements is worse than braving the monsters.
"Sleep," I say simply, noticing that I'm barely able to keep my amber eyes open. |

"I don't even know why I gave you the option; I knew you were too tired for a few stiff drinks," Ranstin responds, approaching the innkeeper.
The inn was relatively quiet, but you still weren't able to make out the conversation Ranstin had with the innkeeper. He came back, face as neutral as any Witcher's is. "We've the room upstairs for the night," he said simply, heading for the stairs without waiting for a response.
Once you had caught up and entered the room, you realized that there was only one straw bed.
Ranstin, knowing that this could raise question, was quick to respond. "You may have the bed. I must meditate tonight," he said nonchalantly, removing his two swords to lay them against the wall.

I nod in understanding and approach the straw bed. Not the best thing in the world, truly. That's okay though. I remove my swords and set them beside the bed. I then go on to remove the majority of my armor, leaving only my shirt and pants on.
Then, I crawl into bed and close my eyes, drifting off to sleep and getting my much-needed rest. |

| When you awake, you find that the sun was filtering through the single glass pane the room had to offer. You also noticed that Ranstin and his swords were nowhere to be seen. He must be downstairs already. |

I'd better go down to meet him, then. No good reason to keep him waiting. Slowly, I sit up in bed and briefly rub my eyes. Having woken myself up, I get up and redress myself in my armor, as well as wearing my swords on my back again.
Being in the proper apparel for the day's work, I head downstairs to look for Ranstin. |

| You spot Ranstin sitting over a plate of dry deer venison and have-eaten bread. He spots you out of the corner of his eye and motions for you to take a seat across from him. |

Already up and already eating. I can't blame him. The journey here left us both famished. Hopefully he's ordered something for me to eat already. Maybe not. No matter, I'll just ask for whatever I want.
I head over to Ranstin and sit down across from him, looking down at his food. "Any for me?" |

"A Witcher's purse is one that does not give very often. Besides, I do not know what you like," Ranstin responds evenly, taking a bite from the dried meat.

"Thoughtless," I say quietly as I stand up and walk over to the innkeeper. When I see I have the innkeeper's attention, I turn and point to Ranstin's food. "Same for me." |

| The inn keeper gives you a curt nod before setting the food you had requested out on a platter. He hands it to you along with some ale. "Ten crowns," he says simply. |

(Yup.)
I hand over the money and nod my thanks as I take the platter and ale, walking back over to Ranstin and sitting across from him. "Leaving after we eat?" I ask as I begin to work on my meal. |

Ranstin gave you a curt nod of acknowledgement. "Yes, but about your contract, first," Ranstin started, finishing the last bite of his dried meat.
"We're hunting down a katakan, which will be quite dangerous," Ranstin said, murmuring the latter of the statement. "It was last seen near the sea-side village. Its name escapes me at the moment," Ranstin informs you. |

| "How much are we getting paid for this?" I ask. I say 'we,' I feel like Ranstin's going to take a bit of my payment as some kind of founder's fee. Maybe I'm wrong. I take a sip of my ale and continue eating as I await an answer. |

| "Two hundred-fifty crowns is the base payment, but I'm sure we can haggle. After all, we're their only solution to this mayhem. As far as I'm aware, no other Witchers are in Radoslav," Ranstin informs, taking a drag of his own ale. |

Huh? We're the only Witchers here? Well, I guess that makes sense. Radoslav isn't /that/ big or important of a place. The lack of Witchers is both good and bad though. Good because I'll get paid more. Bad because I'll be dealing with quite a bit. At least I can never say that I'm out of work. I nod to Ranstin and work on finishing up my meal.
"Time to go?" I ask once I've finished up. |

| Any questions I have will probably be reserved for the client. Finishing the last of my ale, I get up and start to head out to my mount with Ranstin. |

"Alright then," Ranstin said, following you out of the inn to the nearby stables. You each put your saddles back onto your horses and are about to mount them when a cynical peasant woman comes running to you.
"Witchers! The beasts has taken 'im, my boy! He needs help, down by the bog!" she screams, grabbing onto Ranstin's arm. Ranstin removes the woman's hands, not delicately but not roughly either.
"Oh please help!" she screamed from the top of her lungs, getting down on her knees.
Ranstin gives you a glance. "Witchers sometimes must make tough decisions; this one is your call," Ranstin tells you, crossing his arms. |

Peasant. Probably doesn't have much in the way of crowns. Won't do me any good to help her. Of course, if we're going out to hunt a katakan, I could use a morning warm-up. Taking on a few child-snatchers would be good for that.
"We'll be back," I say to the woman, getting onto my horse and starting to ride down to the bog. |

Ranstin mounts his mare and follows suit right behind you, all the way down to the bog.
Nearing your destination, you hear the battlecry of a man in his early years, and upon coming closer, you spot a man surrounded by Nekkers, about six of them. He was frivolously defending himself with a hatchet, blocking blow after blow. For a peasant, he was defending himself quite well, but he was doomed to death if help were not provided soon. |
