">actually thinking that hockey and soccer will ever surpass football"
i mean unless the NFL can do something to stop all the brain damage killing players at 50, there won't even be a football league...a lot of people already refuse to let their kids play football because of it.

| For a sport to grow in America, the youth will have to play that sport. Hockey is not played nationwide, and soccer is now just growing. I don't see hockey growing as a nation wide interest sport in the USA so.. |

Despite all the issues, it's going to be a LONG time before soccer ever overtakes football in this country, and hockey is not nearly growing at the rate soccer is
Basketball definitely could overtake football in the next 20-30 years though, times change and the NBA is the definite #2 most popular sport at this point |

"nah, baseball is still the 2nd most popular sport in America (according to The Harris Poll)"
Please don't just read something and automatically accept it as fact, please look at the methodology for ranking and other factors as well besides one poll
it's becoming a big problem in this country
Anyway, believe it or not...Many fans of sports overlap other sports!!! Many people like both football and basketball, but football being the #1 most popular sport, gets the majority of the vote and takes a lot of votes away from basketball. Baseball fans have known to be a bit elitist and there are a good number of people who peg baseball as their "favorite" sport. There are most likely a lot more basketball fans than baseball fans, they just tend to overlap with football moreso than baseball fans tend to overlap with football
Basketball is by far the most played youth sport (Look up "Hidden demographics youth sports ESPN magazine" because I can't link it)
Check the World Series and NBA Finals ratings from the last couple of years, NBA Finals have been doing much better and are on the rise while MLB numbers are on the decline
Go check out any neutral sports messaging boards and check the basketball and baseball subforums. Chances are the basketball subforum is more popular
Basketball players are some of the most marketable athletes in the world--moreso than baseball players
To say baseball is more popular than basketball CURRENTLY is just willful ignorance at this point |

>Check the World Series and NBA Finals ratings from the last couple of years, NBA Finals have been doing much better and are on the rise while MLB numbers are on the decline
first of all, MLB teams have their own networks, the games aren't shown on national TV
because of this, MLB teams have local fan bases, these are fan bases that support the local team and not just PLAYERS like the NBA where there are no actual fan bases, just fans of players
>Go check out any neutral sports messaging boards and check the basketball and baseball subforums. Chances are the basketball subforum is more popular
this isn't a real point
>Basketball players are some of the most marketable athletes in the world--moreso than baseball players
because basketball doesn't have fan bases around teams
>To say baseball is more popular than basketball CURRENTLY is just willful ignorance at this point
if baseball was shown on national TV instead of local networks like the NBA it would have the same TV ratings, in reality TV ratings don't mean anything for this reason
MLB has way higher attendance (in proportion to the stadium size, not just total), local support, and more fans overall
