Fallout 3 is a great game and really blew me away.. even though I played it only early last year. It's still immersive, fun and interesting, and if you haven't played NV or 4 then it will be one of the best gameplay experiences you will have
(..or at least it was for me) |

Fallout 3 standard works fine, and then you can pirate the DLC. Trust me, the pirated DLC works on the base game

Buying FO3 is Worse. The Main Game has 12 sidequests. Yes, 12.

Fallout 1 and 2 haven't aged well. I don't mean to start an argument here, but if OP hasn't played a Fallout already then he should probably avoid them. |

Yeah.. they haven't aged to greatly, however they are still great games once you get into them, it is just the first 15-30 minutes are kind of slow and boring, but after that it is really fun, the only problem is that there is no DLC, but there is nearly infinite limits of character builds and replayability, plus DLC isn't really expected from old games

"it is just the first 15-30 minutes are kind of slow and boring, but after that it is really fun,"
Far longer than that. Would not recommend to a beginner... I would say anyone who has completed 3 NV or 4 first and enjoyed the RPG elements more would like it.
Also, the newer Fallouts have a mix of RPG and FPS, meaning that some people love the new ones and hate the old ones. It's really a risk and could kill someone's interest in the series before actually get to the good bits.
"but there is nearly infinite limits of character builds and replayability,"
I hear this a lot, but the game isn't that fun to replay. I've tried several times and just couldn't get into it more than once. The stats do allow for gameplay variation but I don't think it's worth going through again.
"the older Fallout games are hard to get into"
Yeah, and as I stated before this could kill someone's interest in the series |

actually sorry for double stop, i thought you meant what you should buy.
OBC isn't worth buying. Buy Fallout 3 or New Vegas. |

"hard to get into" That's because Bethesda screwed over Fallout 1 and 2 by leaving them in the dust, and since F3 was 3D, every single new player would most likely not like the turn based system in F1 and 2, maybe it is just because I can tolerate turn based, and sometimes I even prefer it over real time |

| "since F3 was 3D, every single new player would most likely not like the turn based system in F1 and 2, maybe it is just because I can tolerate turn based, and sometimes I even prefer it over real time" I think it's more a matter of available technology. Fallout 1 and 2 were sprite-based. I bet if they were made now they would still be quite similar to ## #### people like turn based and some people don't. |

I think I prefer the 3D Fallouts more than the isometric ones
but I haven't played much of Fallout 2 |
