For the past 2 years I've loved playing both DayZ and Apocalypse Rising, both on and off, because having a cooldown from playing both seems to be required. I can also script, and I'm looking for a game to make, so I can't help but think: Why not make my own?
Before I start, let me point something out. I am not trying to recreate any existing game. In fact, that's my worst fear; emulating another game too much. My only goal is to create a game with my own style that I find fun.
That being said, it's very easy to get close to the line of making a game that's not unique in any way when there already exists a few games that are of the same genre (open world exploration and collecting) and premise (survive against zombies). It'd be set if I happened to be the first to think of putting an open world and zombies together. Sadly, that's not the case. Regardless, no game is unique in every way, and there's no harm improving a preexisting genre, at the end of the day.
For the sake of being original and innovative, I got to thinking. What do I like about this genre? What makes it fun for me and everyone else? Here's the answer: Overall: Exploring and collecting loot in an interesting world to improve your character, and having interactions with the world and other players. Subgameplay: Roleplaying to an extent, controlling entire towns, driving around, etc.
If you have an observant eye, you will have noticed I left out zombies. Why? Ultimately, they play very little role in gameplay, and can often take away from the experience. In exchange, zombies give you a reason for why you're playing, a backstory.
That alone offers a [more] unique game idea, instead of a run-of-the-mill DayZ, as many have come and gone. Still, as far as I know, Rust already is this (although the gameplay is different). Let me STRESS that my game would likely not be as arcade-styled as Apocalypse Rising, and not as simplistic.
That leads me to my main point. I love playing games of this genre, so what would make any game I make new, innovative, and fresh? Any comments appreciated. |

| I'm looking for gameplay ideas, whether it's overall themes, like having zombies, or random ideas for the game. |

if you want it to be apocalyptic don't use zombies, they are a good one, but over used there are plenty of other types of apocalyptic scenarios you can use that could give a good story and make you have unique features in your game

| Make sure your Guis look clean and professional. Sometimes the difference between a good game and a great game is the quality of the Gui menu's and how intractable they are. |

| I think the zombies being in the game is indirect back story. The players would already know why they are here, but if you didn't have zombies people would assume that we are the only people left on earth, which in my opinion is a better idea than zombies. |

Im a good builder and have a great idea for a game, you can use the idea or/and me if needed. The game would be basically an apocalyptic survival but instead of Zombies, its Winter Themed and aliens.
What happend is that Aliens crash landed into the Antarctica, shattering the ice and breaking earths rotational spin, causing all of the earth to freeze since its in a tempoary ice age. Since this was a mothership, theres alot of aliens. The aliens harness energy from crystaline. A energy and power source unknown to man. There are chunks of crystaline all over the world, when a player gets near one he can gain a power from it. Sometimes an event happens when it tells all the players the location of a huge chunk of crystaline, to which all the players group towards it to fight for its power. To gather the power from a crystal it takes around a 20 to 30 seconds. Some crystals are bigger than others and might have more powers available in them, so groups of players can gain benefits from being in a group. I know this all sounds very Fantasy mixed with Sci-Fi, but ive always thought of it as a good concept and might try and make my own game sometime with this plotline. However anyone can use it. |

| Apoc Rising is a totally different styled game than what I would make. We'd hardly be competitors. I'd probably play both. |

i know you said no gameplay ideas but haha, here comes one!
i think it would be cool if you expanded on the roleplay side of owning towns, maybe you could make a system where you could claim certain towns as your own, making other players/teams of players fight for area
know what im spittin |

| I've thought about the whole conquering, settling, and stuff and like, but overall I think base building + player interactions fit fine for the open world environment |

| yeah zombies play a very little role in gameplay, its not like a game based around a zombie apocalypse gave you all these ideas or anything |
