So, I had overheard a girl saying something about one of my friends which sounded out of the ordinary. I dwelled on it awhile, and I got a really stupid hunch: The girl likes my friend. I go on Skype, and I tell him very vaguely what the girl had said, and why it was weird. I didn't tell him who she was or what my hunch is. I did it extremely awkwardly, and made a big deal out of it. I suddenly realized the problems behind what I did when he asked me "tell me who they are". I don't know if he got the hunch from the info I gave him, but he won't answer me directly when I ask him why he wants to know. How badly did I screw up, and how can I fix this?

You screwed up really badly my friend.
"I suddenly realized the problems behind what I did when he asked me 'tell me who they are'". Just say that in your head a few times.
He didn't ask you "...who they are..."
He declared that you are to tell them who they are. It's called a declarative statement. It's not an interrogative it's a declaritive.
Maybe now you're starting to comprehend just how royaly you screwed up.

@Clothin, that wasn't actually the exact quote. His exact quote was "now, who said this?" I'm still screwed anyway.

In order for him to listen to my reasoning, I wound up telling him why I couldn't tell him the person's name. It seemed to work at first, but then he told me he thinks he knows who, and he will have to investigate the hunch. *Huge Mental Facepalm*
He then told me that if I tell him their name, he wouldn't have to do that, and instead he would do "nothing" with the information (no he didn't put quotes, I did that to show what I thought about it). I told him that if he planned to do nothing with it, he doesn't need it. He then compared the info to a painting (his argument being that you do nothing with a painting), and I told him that the info was more like nuclear launch codes. He tried to change the subject after that, and I haven't heard a single word from him since. He won't have a chance to talk to the person until Monday, so today I have been getting people together and asking them to help me in the event he starts talking to others about it. How screwed am I now?

Well, it seems I called his bluff. He at the end of Monday told me he decided he didn't want to be "mean" and try and "embarrass me". During the day though, I went around asking people to tell my friend to shut up and mind his own business if he said anything "weird" to them. I told quite a few people to do this, including the girl. Now I am gonna have people asking me why xd. Oh well, I can easily tell them vaguely why.
