(( TL;DR at the bottom. ))
Humans, as a rule, are a very insecure species. We all have it in our heads that we are great- intellectually, physically, as people, socially etc.
The first and third example are, of course, the most common forms of egotism. We all like to believe that we're intelligent, kind people. It's very difficult to get past this in these times, especially, due to what I call the "Validation Crisis." Physique is the hardest to feel secure about, due to an ironic sense of insecurity. This comes from us constantly being TOLD, "Hey, it's what's *inside* that counts," and yet being SHOWN time and again that this isn't (entirely) true. This, however, is where the first two statements above are present, side-by-side.
The medium I write on, of course, is the internet, which happens to be a place where the socially awkward congregate to find security. It's here that we see an opportunity to maximize our own narcissism. We've been shown, or at least many of us have, that we *aren't* all that beautiful physically, and that for many of us becomes a problem- and for those of us who've had little trouble over our physique, social awkwardness often replaces physicality in this case. So, instead of looking at ourselves in a mirror and saying, "Be the best person you can be," we look and say, "Ugh, what ###### They can't see you for whom you *really* are!" It is through this first mental backflip that we begin the process of self-validation.
So, on the internet, where few know what you look like and fewer still care, we begin to idolize the two, less valued aspects of a person (in real-world society, RLS for time's sake)- the intellect, and the personality. Because we are an insecure, probably ugly person surrounded by other insecure, probably ugly people (I'm not projecting here, I promise) who can't really make it in RLS, we tend to find ourselves in a crowd of Yes Men. The significance of this should be obvious- our view of our personality and intelligence becomes multiplied a thousandfold by showers of unneeded affirmation.
Humans don't need to be affirmed. We need to be humbled, so that we can see our shortcomings AND our positive attributes. Both of these are important, make no mistake, and since I know I will be vilified for this, I'll explicitly state that I don't believe anyone is totally imperfect- I just believe it necessary, at this point in time for reasons which I will make clear in a moment, that I need to point out that we aren't as great as we all want to be.
I digress; as we begin to identify ourselves as untapped, unrealized masterpieces of God's creation, we finally find value in personality in intellect, but around a core ideological reverence towards ourselves. Basically, this translates into- "Well, obviously I'm great. Now, what about all these others?" This stems from the natural human in-group/out-group mentality from which we all suffer.
The end result is that a good number of us rise over others here as shallow pseudo-intellectuals who hide behind a wall of narcissism. For some, this is a victim complex. For others, this is a pile of sophistry which in itself embodies pseudo-intellectualism. For others still, there is an effective mixture of both of these.
Fortunately, there are those who dodge this state of narcissism, or even find their way out of their echo chamber the hard way. This comes from the "Ridi-pull," as I call it. Those who manage to attain some slight form of self-awareness often ridicule those who have not, in order to pull them out of said echo chamber. It's not always a pleasant transition. No, in fact, it's almost always terrible- one might compare it to a very violent birthing process in which the child comes out kicking and screaming. (cont) |

Once again, however, I must cut in for an aside- the self-aware are not perfect. I don't mean to suggest that. In fact, by self-awareness I mean coming to terms with the issues that plague your life and you as a person. That doesn't mean you come up with a solution.
This was true of a friend of mine. He was a very intelligent guy, but also a very, very sad one with some... strange tendencies which multiplied his misery. For him, ROBLOX and RPF were an escape, a means to find a new world, and a way to show others some insight into his mind through the roleplays he himself created (which were often bleak). He was a confused kid, like many of us, with some issues. But he wanted to be good.
Unfortunately for him, there are many of the aforementioned Self-Validators on the RPF, one of whom specifically focused on the intellectual aspect of the self-validation.
The two inevitably butted heads. Because my friend was a genuinely intelligent person and the other was a childish, socially inept narcissist, debates sparked up which often left the latter intellectually demolished. This is where real self-validation begins, and where all of this ties together. When Caliban is shown his own face in a glass, he is oft known to become enraged. So too was it that when the Self-Validator was shown his own idiocy, he was enraged.
So, my friend left. His absence left an insecurity vacuum. The guy who showed Caliban his face was gone, and so Caliban rampaged, screaming "I'M NOT UGLY!"
To put it more directly, the Self-Validator found that the one who called him stupid was gone, and so he campaigned to re-assert his own intelligence. It was masked under a facade of intellect.
"You are all fools for feeling bad for him! He was a terrible person!" cried Caliban, shattered mirror firmly in hand as he waved it about.
In the end, however, the truth should be obvious. It's just a desperate attempt by the Self-Validator to prove to himself that he's not an idiot, and that he's beautiful in at least one way.

I understood that Tim is guilty, right? And that's about Zorrow, right?
Anyway, I feel very sorry for Zorrow - if this's about him - and I hope he returns back. |

"'How dare you insult Z0rr0w :(' Well, off the top of my head he's an ignorant, ####### ######### who incites flamewars and brags about watching little girls on a roleplaying forum on a kid's computer game website. This paper was not "about" Zorrow. This was about Tim attacking Zorrow. Do I REALLY have to spell that out for you? |
