Fungi is the name of a kingdom of eukaryotic organisms characterized absorption of nutrients from either living or dead organic matter, lack chlorophyll, and can either reproduce via budding or through spores.
There are 3 phyla of fungi, along with a group simply known as "imperfect fungi."
Ascomycetes- These fungi primarily reproduce using spores, which are formed in a sack called an ascus. Budding has also been observed in some species of this phylum. Ascomycetes include truffles, morels, and yeasts. There are approximately 32000 species.
Basidiomycetes- These fungi also primarily use spores to reproduce, borne on club-shaped structures called basidia. The hyphal cell that produces spores is called a basidium. Occasionally, basidiomycetes reproduced via budding. There are approximately 22000 species, including mushrooms, toadstools, and rusts.
Zygomycetes- They can reproduce either way, and their multinucleate hyphae (filaments that make up the mycelium, or vegetative part of the fungi) lack septa (the internal walls that divide the hyphae) except for in reproductive structures. This results in meiosis just before the zygote germinates. Zygomycetes include Rhizopus (black bread mold). There are approximately 1050 species.
Imperfect fungi- Reproduction through spores has never been observed in these fungi. Many are thought to have once been ascomycetes that have lost this ability. 17000 species of imperfect fungi are known, including aspergillius (which causes a variety of lung diseases all known as aspergilliosis) and penicillium (one of the ingredients of penicillin, an important medicine).
