A player on defense CAN play offense if they so choose, and vice-versa, it all depends on their athletic ability.
For instance, Tom Brady can NOT play Defense, but he is great on offense.
However, Antonio Cromartie was trying to be a WR for the (Jets? or Cardinals) because apparently he's a good catcher.
People playing on offense and defense is far more common in High School, though.

yes the CAN, though it happens very rarely, and is normally used as a non-skill position(linemen, fullback)
