There are going to be stages. By one billion years, assuming humanity hasn't gone extinct by then and is still a uniplanetary species (the latter is very unlikely, considering the rate at which technology is advancing), we will go extinct. So will most other lifeforms. The sun's luminosity would have largely increased by that point (roughly 10%), and it would be hot enough to boil our oceans. The Goldilocks Zone would shift backwards, even enough to where we'd be too close to the sun to sustain liquid water. The water will be stuck inside of our atmosphere in a gaseous form causing a greenhouse effect, which would cause even more heat to be trapped. Life on Earth that requires all of it (which is all of them, considering most cellular processes need an aqueous environment) would go extinct quite some time before the one billion year mark. That will be the end of LIFE on earth, but not necessarily the end of the planet itself. By about four billion years, the Milky Way and Andromeda would have collided. The stars in both galaxies are spaced out to the point where it's very unlikely that there would be very many major collisions. It's not a factor in the end of the world, but it's worth noting. By five billion years from now, our star will no longer be main sequence like it is now (which is the most stable point in a star's life). It will reach a point where it starts its helium burning process. From this point onward, the star will expand into a red giant until it dies. Within about 7.5 billion years, Earth will become tidally locked with our star, similar to how the moon is tidally locked to us. Only one side of Earth will be facing the sun. Due to this, one side of Earth will be searing hot, and the other will be frigid. By 7.6 billion years, the sun would have expanded beyond Earth's orbit. Whatever life may be left (which is almost impossible by this point) would be rendered entirely extinct, as the sun has completely engulfed Earth.

Keep in mind, that model does NOT take into account completely random events. It doesn't factor in GRBs (which aren't likely, but entirely possible), asteroids, nuclear warfare, supervolcanoes, methane gas pockets, rogue comets, surprise black holes, deadly superbugs, or any other potentially world-ending events. It only covers what we are almost 100% positive to happen.
