What do you think would happen to society as a whole if the education system focused on students strengths rather than their weaknesses starting in high school? (Obviously there is a need to learn basic concepts in all areas, but in high school is when you are beginning to be presented with more advanced classes which is why I say it would start there.)
For example, say a student is amazing at working with numbers but absolutely terrible at science. The education system that focuses on strengths would put that student into courses all pertaining to numbers and math so he can improve on his strengths rather than his weaknesses (science).
Personally, I think it would improve society GREATLY. Not only has years and years of research found evidence that focusing and improving on your strengths rather than your weaknesses improves personal life, but it also improves your life and attitude in the workplace. You're SIX TIMES more likely to be engaged in your job if it focuses on your strengths.
P.S.1 : When I say strengths, I mean NATURAL strengths. Learning programs and such are usually created to improve your weaknesses, so improved weaknesses are not natural strengths.
P.S.2 : If you would like to read more about this topic or find your own strengths, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND ordering a book called: "Strengths Finder 2.0." It is written by Tom Rath. |

| It was an example to simply get the point clarified. You could replace science with anything really. |

It's interesting for a certain audience, especially when people contribute to the discussion instead of making replies such as, "You said this would be interesting."

At this point the current education system is a scam just for getting money. If they really wanted a change they would be doing it.
Thou, If school were places to focus on a students strength then that would be amazing. Because, if some one isn't applying what they learn in school to everyday life why are they learning it.
I wouldn't have met some great people and some terrible people if it wasn't for the current education system so I guess I can't complain that much. |

@John,
That's definitely another aspect to the change if this were to happen; the different types of people you would meet throughout school. You would be within your own specialized group and not necessarily interact with the other groups too often. It would definitely be a very different experience to what we have now. |

@Eston,
A surprising amount of people don't actually know how to definite or recognize their strengths. In the second postscript I recommended a book that fully explains and goes into detail about individuals strengths and gives you a code to use their program once that tells you your top five strengths. |

Yeah, except it wouldn't always work. I'm a beast in chemistry I've got a grasp of basic physics yet I suck at maths. I don't know of any job in that focuses solely on chemistry. Pharmacist? Gotta mess with does and percentages. Lab assistant? You're the one to make all the equations.
This wouldn't lead me anywhere besides a maniacal dropout who puts himself in dangerous situations (EG mixing HCl and NaOH together) for fun.

sounds repugnant
i hated all of the career searching crap and the expectation to know exactly what the hell you are doing by the beginning of senior year of hs so you can apply to colleges
i honestly have a lot of strengths in the academic side of things, so it wasn't easy to decide what i am "best" at
and i still don't know if i have the answers yet |

I have great news OP! The "what-if" is already a reality! It's called college/university education!

@Wustard,
Boy do I love sarcasm!
However, this proposed system would drop any classes that aren't related to your best / most enjoyable strengths! Meaning all "common core" classes you don't need past a certain point (8th grade) would be dropped and replaced with classes specialized for your strengths!
Even in college you're required to complete basic common core classes (Usually a year's worth) before entirely specialized classes! This means less time focused on your strengths and more time spent attempting to improve your weaknesses, which again, studies have proven when you focus on your weaknesses your entire quality of life is not as good as someone focusing on their strengths!
Not to mention that out of 10,000,000 people interviewed, more than 7,000,000 said that they are six times less likely to be engaged at work when they're focusing on their weaknesses instead of their strengths. This includes people who decided to improve upon and go into a job focusing on those weaknesses.
Good try though! |

This is Not Meant to offend, but if you're going to school to actually learn the subject you are Interested in rather than thinking of it as a petty formality to get a diploma, pick a different subject.

@Riarsi,
So, for example, let's say I'm amazing with numbers and my strengths lead me to believe I will be an accountant.
Why should I still take classes such as Chemistry and Biology when I know I will not need to improve upon those areas for my area of expertise? I could use that time instead to improve upon my area of expertise and perform a higher quality job. |

| okay then why don't we just make test tube babies and choose the best traits for them to have so they can perform the best in their subject area and in society as a whole? |

ok stop replying to the thread in atr this dual thread is confusing
core classes are necessary as a standing point you need ALL of those classes to be able to do anything
Math goes with science (equations) English goes with math (being able to explain yourself) English goes with science (writing up a lab report)
like son u cant just like say "screw math & english i like science" after highschool ur probably going to have a hard time explaining urself properly with the literary knowledge of a middle schooler because you didn't study english post middle school, and ur probably going to mess up equations/have a hard time with them if you skip out on math
the core classes in highschool are basically the "basics" of each field to get you a proper standing
