Do it like most everyone else does, apply for scholarships, do good in school, and get what ever is left in student loans.

yeah let's sign up for 3 years of active military duty literally just to pay for college and no other reason |

Than don't go to college or get scholarships. If you go to college out of the country you're going to be paying big bucks for plane tickets, you're going to be barely get any financial aid, and you're going to be hundreds if not thousands of miles away from home.

student loans would only cover 60% of the cost anyway, and that includes taking a subsidized loan.
there are two types of loans offered to college students. subsidized loans which begin to compile interest after you've graduated (the government pays the interest while you're still in school), and unsubsidized loans which start to compile interest as soon as you accept them.
in the end, you'd still be in a massive hole and it would be at 5x the price you started |

| There are colleges that give free rides based on merit (academics). University of Alabama does something like that on test scores. You should seriously look at this college and figure out ways to plan to reach the threshold. |

I'm a good student but I don't think that I'd ever qualify for a merit scholarship. Of course I'll still do my best and look into it and who knows, maybe I'll qualify but I don't really think it's realistic for me.
