I've said it before. Linux is if you're a pro at doing things yourself. Windows is for someone who wants to do things with fewer distractions. Mac is for someone who wants to do fewer things with no distractions.

Windows
The downsides for Windows: Windows updates are crap Windows can break easier Can be hacked easier
The downsides for Mac: Slower than Windows Screen can glitch out sometimes Laptop keyboard does not include number pads
The downsides for Linux: Do-it-yourself Harder to use and supports a lot less programs |

My thoughts:
The downsides for Windows: Windows updates are glitchy crap. Windows can break easier. [2] Windows is the most popular so of course everyone makes viruses for it. The next version of Windows should really just build a new OS from the ground up so we get rid of all of the unused system files and code and crap, and get a nice fresh start.
Windows is well-rounded, supports a lot of programs, viruses, and "features'. It's easy to use, but then so is Mac.
The downsides for Mac: Not many programs work on Mac. You can get by, but if someone makes a program, generally they make it for Windows first. Flame at me all you want for saying this, but from my limited experience with Mac, it's true. Where does all of the money you pay for a Mac go? There must be a good $500 left over after all of the components are paid off.
Macs are the fancy peoples' computers. They work better, they're cleaner. But mostly I only see them used for businesses. I have never in my life seen someone IRL who has a Mac as their home computer, except my aunt whose business is making artwork at home. It's her business computer still.
Linux is its own deal, we don't need to cover it since it's totally different than the others.

| People who use "Windows" and "OS X" are mere "Script-Kiddies". "Gahnoo" is the best operating system. |

Levels of "Average joe" to "Hardcore programmer", based on my current information:
Windows OS X Linux Gahnoo? Your own OS Special BIOS for programming - who needs an OS? "Where did I leave my soldering iron?" "Pass me that wafer, will you?" Shakulanta Devi "I made an emulator for Devi's brain in Windows!"

For development, Boeing? Probably Mac. Since I use computers for other things too, I use Windows (On top of it being just what I am used to)

| Yeah, support for OS X sucks. My "home computer" is a Mac but I use bootcamp, which crashes multiple times a day (though that problem seems to only exist for me; if you search "bootcamp bsod " + bsod name you will find all posts by me). |

Linux. FreeBSD if you're paranoid about things and *really* don't want to touch GNU.
Pros and cons for everything:
Windows: pros: - i mean powershell is not that bad for automation and scripts and stuff - easier to get graphics cards to cooperate - directX - "familiarity" (aka "i'm lazy" factor.)
cons: - You have to actually cooperate with Microsoft. Immediate turn-off. - Lack of UNIX tools - Win32 is amazing until you realize everything is named weirdly. - DirectX........................
Mac: pros: - It looks nice. - It does actually have Unix tools. - It actually looks nice. - It has Bash. Somehow. Despite being hated to death by RMS, it has Bash.
cons: - It's a neuterred FreeBSD with a slapped on GUI because Apple. - You have to actually cooperate with Apple. Immediate turn-off. - App store - Shove Metal down your throat
Linux: pros: - GCC is nice and friendly and trustable AND DOESNT SHOVE A DAMN KEYLOGGER LIKE WINDOWS VISUAL C++. ("Oh no, it's just so that we can make sure your programs are better supported by the operating system!") YOU JAMMED A DAMN THING INTO THE COMPILER SO THAT IT DOES SOMETHING MORE THAN I TOLD IT TO DO. NO.
- It's Linux - it's familiar, it's simple, it's elegant, and it's UI is either nonexistent or whatever you feel like.
- fork() is your frieeennnddd
- It's a (not neuterred) UNIX.... clone.
- It's **FAST** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfGjLIPRgDA Faster than Windows could ever hope to be.
- It's not bundled with the crap Macs and Windows have.
- GCC
- Grep is your friieeennddddd
- It does graphics better than Windows or the Mac could ever hope for.
- It runs *literally everywhere*. The only platform that can't run Linux afaik is a Java processor or the JVM trying to run Linux, because the JVM is a virtual machine with a very specific processor architecture, and a Java processor is real hardware trying really hard to pretend to be a JVM.
- Did I mention GCC?
- It's *reallllyy* stable. I think the last time I've ever seen a kernel panic ("Blue screen of death" or "Stop error" for you people still actually running Windows and not it's superior clone ReactOS - irony being I've had more BSoDs on Windows 10 than ReactOS 0.4 Alpha.) was about 5 years ago? Yeah.
- Did I mention Linux is better than Windows?
- bash dash ash lsh and even damn PowerShell are available on Linux.
- WINE lets you do anything for Windows on Linux anyway
- Did I mention it's better than Windows?
- There are literally only an estimate 49 viruses for the Linux kernel (We ignore viruses targetting a specific piece of software and then using that to do bad things.). By the way, all 49 of them aren't cheating and require you to put in root possword first. You have 49 viruses, as opposed to gagfrigginjillion for both the Mac and Windows, because both Apple XNU and Windows NT had security as an afterthought. (I'd insert a Human Torch "Flame on!" clip here but I can't find one... ): )
- Linux handles NTFS (The Windows file system) better than Windows, and it handles HFS+ better than the Mac.
- Linux also has reiserfs, and other file systems like ext4, both of which are inherently just better than NTFS.
- Did I mention it has KVM?
cons:
well it's linux and it's driver support is crap and nvidia won't cooperate but I didn't say anything because nvidia's engineers are actually really nice when you talk to them it's the managers and the marketing team I tell you >.>
