| I'm Hungarian and I don't know how to speak it. I tried teaching myself once but dang the language is complicated. My grandparents are from Hungary. |

1. where did I say i couldn't be proud to be hungarian for not knowing a language 1. you didnt say that, it was a question, how could you be proud to be from a certain nation, when you cant even speak that nations language, that is a key aspect of the nation 2. i never said you werent, just that i questioned why you were so proud of your nation if you couldnt speak the language |

he kind of has a point, being proud of a nationality is in turn a pride in a national identity, part of which is culture, and (one of) the biggest part(s) of culture is language
of course i suppose it doesn't matter much if you were born in the US, but yeah, you're not really hungarian you're american

well, you raise a very good point
what have I done for my homeland?
well, I've already planned to learn the language and I'm considering moving back in the future
it means something to me

@sovan
of course it isn't impossible but holy hell if it isn't hard i mean if he really wants to do it what i say won't matter anyway
but hungarian is literally like an alien language
nearly all the european languages are distantly related to each other - this makes them a bit easier for us english speakers, as well as any other native european language speaker
they have grammar rules, syntax, structure and sentence construction that makes sense to us
however, hungarian, along with finnish and estonian are COMPLETELY isolated from the european language branches, they are a curiosity in their own continent
it is an agglutinative language (like japanese and korean, or some of the native american languages), as well as vowel harmony, both of which are features not found in any other european language
so yes, for an english speaker, this is an extremely alien and difficult language. not all languages are created equal, and thus some are just mechanically easier to learn than others. |

"of course it isn't impossible but holy hell if it isn't hard i mean if he really wants to do it what i say won't matter anyway"
its bad linguistics to say a language is objectively hard(er than others)
"but hungarian is literally like an alien language"
uh no hungarians are human beings and their language and culture was developed here on earth they didnt originate from another planet as if it would matter anyway
"nearly all the european languages are distantly related to each other - this makes them a bit easier for us english speakers, as well as any other native european language speaker"
i speak a non-indo-european language as well, ive learned so much of it in just 1.5 years, its really not that much harder from learning an indo-european language its just different
"they have grammar rules, syntax, structure and sentence construction that makes sense to us" "that makes sense to us"
people can make sense of other languages's rules, syntax, whatever a native english speaker can make sense of hungarian grammar just as well as they can make sense of spanish grammar
"however, hungarian, along with finnish and estonian are COMPLETELY isolated from the european language branches, they are a curiosity in their own continent it is an agglutinative language (like japanese and korean, or some of the native american languages), as well as vowel harmony, both of which are features not found in any other european language"
my goodness i speak turkish which is a highly agglutinative language and also has vowel harmony, this is not my first language. and its not a big deal. its not hard
"so yes, for an english speaker, this is an extremely alien and difficult language."
no
"alien"
stop calling the language alien, thats not nice
"not all languages are created equal, and thus some are just mechanically easier to learn than others."

@sovan
hmm, seems you probably have more knowledge in linguistics, but regardless, keep in mind that the experience is not the same for everyone ;)
although certainly you can acknowledge that for somebody who only speaks english, hungarian is a big step up, and will take lots of practice and hard work to become fluent in
sure, maybe some of my points were exaggerated or wrong in some way or another, but it's quite true that some languages have more complicated grammar or sentence forming or syntax rules
of course, informal and everyday speech has to be considered too, but from a technical standpoint some languages simply have more intricacies |

"hmm, seems you probably have more knowledge in linguistics, but regardless, keep in mind that the experience is not the same for everyone ;)"
youre getting so close basically we cant rank languages by their difficulty because there are too many factors, and theyre all subjective, and completely depend on the person... not to mention some of the factors dont even include the language's grammar or vocabulary...
"although certainly you can acknowledge that for somebody who only speaks english, hungarian is a big step up, and will take lots of practice and hard work to become fluent in"
all languages take lots of practice and hard work to become fluent in a monolingual learning a second language is always a big step up
"sure, maybe some of my points were exaggerated or wrong in some way or another, but it's quite true that some languages have more complicated grammar or sentence forming or syntax rules"
hungarian grammar is not more complicated its just different from what we as native english speakers are familiar with |
