Find a job that provides a good or service in high demand with a barrier to entry. It is that simple. You will need to work hard to compete but that is how you always have a job.
At least that is what I am going to try to do.

You need to be objective in your analysis.
Can I provide a good or service in high demand with a gender studies degree?
Is being a gender studies teacher a service in high demand? Not really...
Perhaps you should spend your money on a different degree. |

| I forgot another factor. You won't make "dumb" cash money if your job is not in the private sector. |

| And if you work for someone you probably aren't going to get rich. But you can make a decent living. |

| The barrier to entry means something like a degree. This limits your competition to those who have credentials and artificially increases your salary by limiting those looking for employment in your line of work. |

Being a singer has a non-existent barrier to entry but since it is the private sector you can make millions. If you aren't having any success as a singer you are probably starving.
Being a doctor is not private sector but the barrier to entry is so high that the salary will leave you set for life if you get into a competitive specialty. |

being a singer requires training and an education in music.

You are not legally allowed to teach without a degree.
When it comes to music, all you need to do is try. |

| Dreamlike you are right that the cost of living in Hawaii is outrageous. It is because they have to import everything except pineapples. LOL |

'trying' will get you hired by nobody. look up any contemporary singer, if they didn't start professionally when they were children, they will have had an education and very likely at a school which has 'performing arts' in the title.
any bozo can 'sing', but no one will pay them unless they look legit.

| Even if Hawaiian teachers made more then teachers in Texas, the Texan teachers could still have a higher standard of living depending on the cost of living in their area. |

I am talking about everyone who wasn't born with a silver spoon in their mouth.
For example, rich homie quan or lil wayne.
