Do you live in a city or densely-populated area? Clouds or even light fog can do it too, obviously.

It's probably light pollution. It applies to sound too. Try going into a very very quiet room and turning on some music. Even if the volume is very low, you can still hear it quite well. Now go next to a fan or busy street or something, and THEN try to listen to music. Even if it's up fairly loud, you'll still barely be able to hear it. It's probably just other light blocking out the light of the stars.

Yes, if you go somewhere with less light, let's say in a field, you should be able to see them fine.

Yes. You don't have to go too far from the city. The further away the better, but you'll start to see a sky full of stars once you get 10 or so miles out. After a certain point you start to get diminishing returns, but every bit is worth it.
